thermal goop stuff questions for AMD athlon

i was wondering exactly how to apply that thermal goop stuff like artic silver, etc. on an amd athlon because all those little electronic things on top of the processor seem like that stuff would short it all out or something. is that stuff non-conductive or what? just wondering.

Thanks

Having trouble replying on this dial up.

All you need is a half a drop right on top of the CPU slug. Any more is wasteful as the sink fits so tight that it spreads it out pretty well. Thermal compound is non-conductive to electricity. I did the big drop on the slug the first time and got it all over the jumpers on the chip's plate. No ill affects. Didn't even unlock it for me. Have fun!

Here. Read THIS from Artic Silver. It has everything you need to know about applying that goop.

What you should do is, use some high quality thermal goop... such as Artic Silver, which I personally not used, but I use the Radio Shack stuff, works great.. Then you might want to use like a razor blade to push the thermal stuff into the nooks and crannies on the core.. or am I incorrect and onto the surface area of the Heatsink..?

An old credit card works good too. Plus it helps cool down your credit card after all the Christmas shopping.

Wow that's great...you rarely see a 16 degree change in temperature between the thermal pad and thermal paste (or did you have nothing in there at all?). I only experienced a 5 degree temperature drop between the thermal pad and ASII, but thats 5 degrees based on the thermal "material" alone. I hope you got ASII-it really is the best stuff you can get right now.

i didnt have a thermal pad, just heatsink touching processor. but thats still good. i didnt use artic silver 2, i should have but i didnt have the patience to order it b/c no store around here carries it. i just used some off-brand stuff from best buy but it seems to work pretty good.
