| Athlon XP or MP?
I know that the Athlon MP is 99% identical to the XP. Usually I would just go for the cheaper XP. There is one difference between the two, which is making me think twice about going with the XP.
You all know that the XP is locked and a real pain to unlock. While the MP is not locked (I read that somewhere). So by paying the extra premium for the MP. I could make my life much easier.
Now I know all of you are going to say, why don't I just go for a faster XP. Well, when I don't need the extra speed (not gaming). I usually down clock my CPU. Power prices are too high to waste on a text editor and browser.
Right now I want to buy a new XP/MP to replace my Duron. Later on I will be moving the CPU
over to a new 761MPX board. So if there are any other small differences that make the MPs work better in a dual config. That would be more of a reason to go for them.

The XP and MP are 100% identical, except for the fact that the MP has multiprocessor support enabled.
The MP is not unlocked, every XP or MP is locked by multiplier.

No, actually the MP's are quite easy to unlock. They are identical to the T-birds except they have a Palomino core instead of a Thunderbird core. A MP still uses the old ceramic substrafe that is 100% electrically neutral, so the pencil trick works on them. I've found that using trace tapes ( www.plycon.com ) is far easier and much more permanent than using a pencil. I'd probably wait for the Thoroughbred cores to come out (.13 micron technology, 333 MHz FSB, backwards compatable with socket A motherboards). Thats when your money will really count. |

If you EVER plan on using the 761 MP...you better have the MP.
Even though the normal XP/T-Bird/Duron is known to work in MPS mode...the 761 chipset motherboard maker is required to FORCE single CPU mode on all but MP processors, and I've heard from people who got stuck with useless extra CPUs because of it.
Thats a compelling enough reason.
