    Help With Unlocking my Duron...

Im about to unlock my Duron today, as I have just received my Dominator II.

I was wondering if it's ok to use Scotch tape to seperate the L1 bridges when writing over them w/ pencil, then take it off, and lay it over the next pair, and so on. I heard that if I cross them, it will fry the cpu.

So is it ok to use tape to cover up the bridges? tnx in advance...

I can see no problem with that. If you leave it on, it will cause problems. Tape nor its adhesive is electrically conductive, so it will not fry the chip. The only problem I could see would be that the residual adhesive (if there is any) would hold in heat, but since you are not near the heat producing centers of the processor, then it will not be a problem (hence the gaudy orange price tag you often see on processors...). So, there is no bad side effect you will get from using tape to temporarily mask the L1 bridges.

I would think there would be more time and effort put into the masking than in actual bridging though....

Good luck. I hope it is a great OCer.

If you can magnify it enough you wont need the tape, the tape may be more difficult to put on then the lead, it wont fry if you cross the bridges it just wont post or itl post in an "odd" way...
Magnification makes it simple, I use a stereo viewer to do it and its a snap...

I think it was hellmund who told me how to do mine. Just use straight razorblade as a straight-edge to keep your pencil where you want it. It'll also help alot if you have a friend to hold a flashlight (maybe) and a magnifying glass (definitely!) for you. Oh, and you'll want to make sure your pencil is as sharp as you can make it.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with using tape to block off a set of bridges while filling them with lead. Just remember to remove the stuff when finished.

    ok, tnx

Il use the tape to seperate them and take it off when done (of course!)

And I'll also use a magnifier glass.

Yeah when unlocking a duron I use a very sharp straight razor blade as a ruler with a very sharp pencil, I found it allowed me to do a good straight line while not crossing mutliple bridges together.

A duron is an athlon with reduced L2 cache(64kb opposed to athlons 256kb). I suggest u look into removing the multipleir lock on athlon cpu's fastback. Here is one walkthrough how to do it

Lemonhead just ment to post somewhere else, that's all U have to remember we come from many many different places the folks around here

See, what I tell ya? It was Hellmund. Anyhow, I used that method and it worked perfectly. Much easier than messing with tiny bits of tape. It unlocked it perfectly too btw.

....................... My computer went crazy again after OC'ing the first time. When I started it up, after the WindowsME screen, the blue error message came up and says:

"I/O subsystem driver failed to load. Either a file in the ./iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt, or system may be low on memory."

This happened everytime I start it up. I tried to go into Safe Mode, but the same thing happens after I hit F8. I have tried moving around my RAM sticks, but the same thing happens, and I know Im not low on it, cuz I have 640 MB. ..............

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

^^^ Thats what happened a few days ago when i tried OC'ing for the first time. Nothing else would work, so I bought XP and installed it, so everything is fine now. I want to OC again though, and need help.

Ok, well the lowest I can set my multiplier to is 7.5, I think.

I decided to that I'll try 7.5x109, and raise the voltage by .5V. Does this sound ok? I just wanna know why I got that error last time I OC'ed, and will it happen this time? Is my Duron an "anti-OC'er" or sumthin lol?

P.S.- Should I raise the multiplier a lot, and keep the FSB low, or keep it the way Im thinking...
