pentium processors have locked multipliers meaning if you have a 1ghz p3, the multiplier will be at 10 and the front bus speed (fsb) is at 100mhz default which equal 1000mhz.
since you can't change the multiplier, the only option to overclock is the FSB. so the default is 100mhz bus speed on all P3 processors. to overclock the bus speed, you will be change the fsb depending on you motherboard. FSB can be changed on some mobos through the jumpers on the board or through the menu in the bios.
do you know whether or not you have PC133 or PC100 memory? It's easier to overclock the fsb with PC133 memory.
for example,
remember on a Intel PIII 1GHZ, the multiplier will always be at 10 and the bus speed is at 100mhz.
10x 100fsb= 1000mhz
10x 115fsb= 1150mhz
10x 133fsb= 1330mhz
now 133fsb is a good setting for a PC133 memory module (duh). here's the fun part. most PC133 will run above 133fsb.
10x 140fsb= 1440mhz may be attainable using a water cooler.
note that there is a limitation on the processor and the motherboard when overclocking . for example, a P3 733 and P3 800 may max out at 1ghz. you may get lucky and go higher. just keep in mind to keep the CPU as cool as possible.
I just sold an overclocked P3 600 @910mhz (6x 140fsb) using as ASUS P3BF.
research your motherboard and see how high the multiplier goes and at what increments. it's best to have a board the has the fsb increments by 1mhz or 2mhz up to 160fsb.
i hope my explanation helps and if i've made any mistakes, please correct me.
