| XP2400+ "Thornton" Core????
OK, I'll admit it, I've been under a rock for a while
I went to NewEgg to price an XP2400+/266 and the search popped up an OEM one with a "Thornton" core? WOZZAT?? I didn't know BillyBob was making Athlons these days
What's the core voltage on one of these things? Any problem running it on a board that's meant for Thoroughbreds, etc.?? What do I need to know about it in general?

"Plans for the current Athlon XP range are slightly different. The new, recently confirmed, Thornton core will feature a partially active cache which will keep the chip to the same size as the current, top-of-the-line XP, the Barton 3200+ carrying 512KB of cache. This would mean that all new XP's would be made from the same wafer, greatly streamlining the manufacture process. Another advantage would be that AMD could market Bartons produced with one cache segment damaged, as Thorntons."
Looks like it's just their newer chip core with half the cache killed. I don't see why it wouldn't work with any old socket A board. Didn't read anything about it not. |

The Thorton is the new designation for AMD's lower cost CPU's. The are, in effect, Barton core CPU's with only half the L2 cache at 256kb.

On a related note, anyone else here notice the lack of 1700+'s at Newegg?
Curiouser and curiouser...

Actually, I've seen it both Thorton and Thornton, but if Newegg has them as Thorntons, I'll run with that.
And no. |
