66C too hot?

In order for a 1700xp dlt3c to run stable on a game, I had to pump in 1.8v. The game still hung up at 1.7v. The default voltage on these great chips is 1.5v. Is this really pushing the envelope? It got to 66C during the game. Some techie, tell me please, what is the realistic frying temp on these chips? How high safely can I go temp-wise?

That temp is a tad bit high. It should be down in the mid to high 40's. Are you sure your game stabilty problem isn't driver related? Are you using the latest drivers for your mobo and video card?

u had to increase the voltage from stock for it to run stable? Are you overclocking it?

That seems kinda odd, are u sure its not a power supply issue?

But as far as the temp is concerned... you're not really in any danger of frying the chip, but its definately warmer than you'd normally like it to be. I always shoot for 40s, with 55-60 as a max.

Yes, I am using the newest drivers. Prime95 actually runs for hours without a problem. It's playing a game that causes the instability. Yes, I am overclocking at 11 x 200.

Personally Id step down the overclocking such that I could keep the temps lower.

Im running an xp1700 dut3c at 1.85v for 11x200 with a coolermaster hhc-001 heat pipe hsf, Ive never seen load or game temps over 55c.

What are you using for cooling, and what about thermal paste.

*** 80-85 is meltdown temps for you processor.

I am running a Volcano 9 at full bore. I used Artic 2 on the CPU. Question for you all. AMD website says the maximum die temp for my chip is 90C. Why are people so conservative about this? I mean, 66C is a long way off from 90. I don't want to push it, but on the other hand, it took 1.8v (at 66C) to get things stable for game playing.

the higher the temp, the less stable it is, the more risk of error, and the shorter life of the pc

If its running perfectly fine for you, then I guess it doesnt much matter.

Is that a tbred A reever? They don't take overclocking very well. I have an xp1700 tbred A running at 12.5 x 133 and at 50c. My mobo won't go any higher so I won't know how high I can go with this cpu.

Stock speed for your XP1700 processor is 1.466 Ghz and you say that you are running it at 11 x 200 which is 2.2 Ghz, thats a massive 734Mhz overclock. I am suprised that your system runs at all at that speed. You need to set to voltage lower (to keep the heat down) and then lower the overclock untill it all works ok.
