Well what else is it you want to know? That's a 10,000 word review If you have specific questions I'll get them answered, but you'll have to say what it s you want know. |

My guess on pricing is that they will come down in about 5 to 6 months. This is a completely new chip...and is in many ways a new architecture even. So production costs are currently sky high. Also there are only 3 chips out right now (i think 3..could be 2 or 4). in any case there are very few chips out, so basically prices will come down when they release more chips. A bit of advice...don't buy an FX. This was a bad move (IMO) on AMD's part. It is simply a rebadged opteron, running on the 940 pin spec. It's a good chip actually...but they are planning on releasing a new 936 pin FX in the next year...so boards and support for this current version of the FX is going to be very shortlived.
Also prices should come down considerably when they get their .09 production process out. I read somewhere that their sweet spot (considering their production techniques and wafer sizes) is around 90-120nm for a die. The current 64's are around 180nm. so when the smaller production size comes out (along with procs with less cache) the die will shrink considerably getting them back in there sweet spot.
So my guess is around 6 months (maybe longer depending on how long it takes them to stablize the .09 process)
EDIT: if you're going to get one now...get the athlon64 3200+
EDIT: found the link: http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1884
also take note of the linux tests they did. These are 64-bit apps running on a 64-bit OS. this is a sign of what this proc can do in the future.

It all depends on what you have money for. AMD has a new Athlon 64 3000+ that might be what you're looking for price / performance wise. Basically you can generally figure on Athlon 64 3200+ being 10-15% faster than Barton generally and up to 25% faster in gaming. FX-51 is 10-15% faster than Athlon 64 3200+.
P4EE loses some, wins some, and ties some, but at over a grand for the chip and no widespread availability, its pretty much out of the picture. |
