| Does raising voltage JUST increase heat?
I have got an xp2500 at 3200 and ~1.7 volts and was wondering what all raising the voltage does. I am running at about 40 degrees celcius. Does raising the voltage just raise the voltage?

Just loosely speaking..it gives the circuit more "headroom" but it does increase the heat...more "capability" as long as the cpu can handle the heat.
Sort of like stretching a rubberband a little tighter..as long as it doesnt snap its ok.

You should be well within any "snapping" issues. Your 2500 wouldn't run at 3200 using stock voltage? Or did you just up it for preventive measures?

No actually I had to raise the voltage to 1.75 to get it stable at 3200+ aka 2.2ghz. I just tried getting a little more oc but I started getting artifacts in the post screen and in the "please wait while flashing bios" screen. I tried leaving my ram at stock and I was still geting artifacts.
Could it be my chipset holding me back? I have stock cooling on it. It is an 8rda+.

That's a possibility. Did you try just raising the multiplier on the CPU? Doing that, and keeping the FSB at 166 will overclock JUST the processor. This way, you're able to see around what clock-speed the CPU can handle, before it starts going bonkers. Or, you could lower the multiplier on the CPU, and see if you still get artifacts at a higher FSB. If so, then it's either the chipset, or the memory. If not, then it's the CPU.
This is all assuming, of course, that your 2500+ has a freely adjustable multiplier.

Larger voltages can increase CPU current and that can increase undershoot. Undershoot can lead to data errors. Increased CPU current will lead to CPU heat as mentioned above, but also can heat the contacts of the CPU socket, which may lead to issues in the socket (fatigue, intermittents). |

You could always decrease the memory frequency, and increase the fsb so you have memory at 166mhz and slowly move it up to 200 with the multiplier and not OC the ram too much and just the cpu.

I can change my multiplier up to 12.5 but when I do 13 then it posts as 1.25 ghz.
Is this normal?

i have a 2500 athlon xp, set the FSB to 200 set bios for highperformance, using only 1.65 volts on cpu, never messed with volts...2.6 on mem 512 ddr 2700 DC on a k7n2 delta L series nforce 2 400 edition
runs great..if i try messing with upping the voltage i get alot of unstability and crashes...should be able to just up the FSB 11X200=Athlon XP 3200 without adjusting voltage, actually putting my bios to high performance it adjusts itself, but only to 1.65 cpu and 2.6 mem
