| Can I possibly do this...?
I have a really old HP Pavilion XE783, running a ASUS CUW-AM with the Intel 810 chipset, and a 700mhz Celeron. I'm wondering if there's any possible way I could overclock this thing and get a little more performance out of it. I'm trying to do everything possible to get something out of this, since I can't get the parts to build my new system for another 5-6 months.
If you would need any other information, let me know. |

Damn... is there any CPU faster than this that I could buy for cheap, and it would be compatible with, and work perfectly in this system? |

I think you are in luck.
If you go to Asus site you can look up the cpu support of the motherboards, for example here ....it doesnt SPECIFICALLY show your "AM" model but it shows about 6 or 8 different "CUW" models and they all support on up to faster celerons and also all showed support for P3's. So that gives you some upgrade room right there. You might even consider a used P3 from somewhere like www.anandtech.com sale/trade forum.
Another option is to use one of these adapters that allows the use of a "Tualatin" celeron or P3. What you would usually do is get a tualatin celeron since they are fairly cheap and are better than the much higher prices 'coppermine" P3's. You can get a new Tualitan 1.2g for like $42 dollars or so from newegg. If you scroll to the bottom of that adapter page you see a link for this page showing again the range of 'CUW" boards but not specifically the "AM"....so I dont know if that would make any difference or not. I have used these type of adapters before and they work good...sometimes you do need a particular bios to get em to work.
By the way they also make better power supplies now for those micro-atx sized deals. You can get those from newegg also...like 200w or so to replace the 145w (or less, lol) stock one. Here is a place that sells updates bioses...not that Id recommend that necesarily, but they did have some info about the motherboard...I also found out it is called a "tortuga" board...one of those weird nicknames...it is an asus board specially made for HP

well it probally will suppot that like he said but the max hp "supported" size is 700MhZ
you migh opt to get a new mobo also for around 100 bucks you can get a decent mobo and a celeron 2 GhZ http://ewiz.com/query.php?categry=123&brand=ASRock
ewiz has some of the asrock brand which i would recomend because they dont require the extra P4 power connector and support bot ddr and sdram so you can use your old stuff then upgrade to new stuff when you have the cash i have one of The M266 and i have my celeron 2.2 overclocked to 2.66 with stock cooling and no problems i think i could get it higher but i dont want to overclock my ram untell i get some ddr
the only problem you might encounter is the hp case wont connect to a standard motherboard so check this first but if it wont work you can get a case for $30 |

Well, here is a page showing your motherboard...they list that it only goes up to a celeron 800mhz...so its a bit of guesswork as to what cpu it will take. Sometimes the OEM type boards are a little bit "crippled". You may just have to search google using phrases like "cuw-am cpu upgrade"
For more confusion also consider that often pages like these are old and it could be that the 800mhz celeron was the fastest celeron out at the time the page was made. An 800mhz celeron uses the 100mhz bus.....so that makes you think you CAN go to a faster cpu....at LEAST to a faster celeron like maybe a 1 or 1.1g celeron

Maybe for kicks, go here and run the "inSpecs10" thingy..it checks for compatability for the "powerleap" upgrades which are very similar to the adapter I listed above |

"I am sorry, but we do not currently offer upgrades for AMD Athlon and Duron based PC's.
Please check back with us often, as we are always releasing ground breaking products. "
