When I look in the BIOS the CPU temp is usually 5 or 6 degrees (Celsius) higher than AsusProbe says. Sometimes the motheboard temp will be up to 10 degrees higher than AsusProbe. Isn't AsusProbe supposed to be the same? Which one is the true temp?
Specs:
Athlon XP 2400+
Asus A7N8X (non-deluxe)
512mb pc2100 ddr
Geforce 4 Ti4800
and WinXP Pro
nothings overclocked yet, I still need to find a good hs/f, but I want to solve this problem as well before I do any overclocking. |

I am a bit skeptical about the ASUS probe myself but have not checked my BIOS to be certain there is a difference. I was seeing different average temps after I had to reformat and reinstall my whole OS including probe. The only change was a complete reformat and reinstall yet the average temps seemed higher than before. At times during idle my CPU temp drops below my MoBo temp which means I either have a really good stock fan and cool CPU or probe is not too accurate. |

The BIOS doesn't idle the CPU, so the temps should be higher than the ones sitting in Windows (2k/XP issue the HLT instruction, and you can do it with RAIN or CPUCool in 9x)
Also, check if there's a bios update out. I seem to remember some ASUS boards had incorrect reading of the temp in the BIOS. People were reporting that after the BIOS update, the temps apparently dropped as much as 15 degrees C.
The AsusProbe software wouldn't worry about that as it directly reads the SMbus so doesn't rely on the BIOS.
Also, is it reading the die temp or the socket temp? AthlonXPs and Morgan Durons have a thermal diode on the chip so you can more accurately monitor it.
Finally, check out a program like MBM or Speedfan and see if that gives you readings more similar to one or the other?

I already updated the BIOS weeks ago, and there isn't any newer BIOS since then. I'll check out those programs and see what they show. |
