| Unlocking the Thunderbird
I have a 1gig thunderbird and I want to try overclocking it. I have tried the pencil trick on the L1 bridges but it didn't work. Shouldn't that unlock it, or am I supposed to do something else.
I am using a K7S5A Pro board with the latest Honey X BIOS. |

Merely unlocking the processor is not enough when overclocking a K7S5A...
Your best bet is to use DDR memory.
Im not horribly familiar with the Honey X Bios but I do know the Cheepoman bios is good for overclocking...
you absolutely must use the chipset heatsink mod detailed in the following link... active cooling being the best bet... http://www.ocworkbench.com/2002/ecs/...OD%20GUID1.htm
and this link is a good general overview of working with this board...... http://www.ocworkbench.com/2002/ecs/k7s5aguide/ |

I think the K7S5A pro did support voltage and multiplier manipulation JPMiller.
The pencil trick should work on the Thunderbirds. Make sure its got plenty of graphite on the chip, but also be careful not to short any of the bridges together.
Is it a type B (100mhz FSB, 10x multiplier) or type C chip (133mhz FSB, 7.5x multiplier) - just out of interest?

Thanks for the links JPMiller and John Prophet, BIG help. I am using Kingston PC2100 256mg and K-Byte PC2100 256mg memory.
I thought about flashing with the Cheepoman BIOS but went with the Honey X instead. Right now I'm running 100/100 but I have had it to 112/133 running stable. That's why I'd like to be able to unlock it. John Prophet, I'm thinking about getting a Circuit writer pen from cyberguys. I guess I think it didn't work because the multiplier setting in the BIOS was still grayed out and wouldn't let me change it. |

| JPMiller, if I go and get the latest Cheepoman bios update, what is that fastwrites all about?

I'll be honest...I never researched it... merely having it, allowed me to use an unlocked athlon to overclock... It worked so I didnt question it...lol |

According to the link you provided it has something to do with the video card, http://www.ocworkbench.com/2002/ecs/...ERCLOCKING.htm, when I flashed to the honey x bios I chose the file without fast writes, I believe it was the HX0110.rom file (could be the HX0811, I don't remember, I have both file saved). |
