What do you all find better? a P4 or an AMD. I know AMD is cheaper than P4, but then iv seen some benchmark tests where AMD outpreforms P4. What do you all think? Which is faster and better: AMD or P4 |

It depends on what you are wanting to do.. For good ol' games and just straight number crunching... MHz for MHz AMD takes the cake... There are some applications that run better on Intels tho but I can't think of what they are right now... I think Photshop is one of them... BUt I could be wrong. |

For the price and the performance I would go with the AMD XP... you won't be dissapointed and your pocket will be a little thicker after the upgrade as opposed to buying parts for a P4 system.. |

Oh no ... now we're going to have a battle about AMD and Intel. Ok, my $0.02 ... or maybe $0.005
I'd say go with AMD. Granted you can finally run a P4 with DDR instead of overpriced RDRAM, I still don't see the need for a P4. Also, depending on what you plan on doing, like overclocking, then the only real choice is AMD. For most tasks, an AMD chip is just fine. It's going to do the same thing as an Intel chip, maybe a little faster or a little slower, depending on what model you get.
AMD proc's can easily beat the P4 in benchmarks. I've seen it on two separate independent sites.
Technically, the P4 has the higher clock rating, i.e., GHz. However, AMD's new naming scheme is set up to compare the performance of their chip to an Intel chip. So an AMD 2000+ XP chip is comparable to a 2.0 GHz intel P4, but the AMD's only running at 1.6 GHz (I think I got that right, someone correct me otherwise).
edit - Then you take the money you saved from buying the AMD instead of the Intel chip and go spend it on good quality DDR RAM. |

let me just get one thing out. p4 chips though are not bad. i know i always stand alone on this, but i'm not going to slam intel. yes, amds are good chips. but intels are not bad either. they're damn good multimedia procs and can be worth the money if you're doing high end multi media and whatnot. they may not be as cheap as amd chips, but they're not BAD.
don't let the sentiment here fool you. amd is good, but so is intel. |

Yes Intel is good cpu but their prices are not... you pay almost twice as much and get the same or less in compared performance with AMD..
AMD = More BANG for less BUCK! |

So I hear the new 2.2 p4's are like $500!
You've got to be kidding......
BTW is there any research to support the "theory" that p4 is better for high end multi-media, or is it just based on the "center of your digital world" marketing BS that works with laymen, but I HOPE not computer people.
Edoras might have the only financially justified p4 in the world! Congrats. You now have an all-expenses paid pass to post any questions you like about p4's. Not even the die hard AMD people should slam you. |
