I use Sygate personal firewall and have never been hacked and have passed all security tests I have thrown at it. I highly reccomend it.

Zone alarm has a pay version. It's 19.95 a year I think. It has updates from time to time.

Zone alarm is really simple to use. You might want to try the free version and see if you like it. I don't know anything about Sygate.

Only updates to these would be if a new version of the software was released.

There are no "definitions" to update as it has nothing to do with virus or spyware.

Zonealarm definitely. Have it at home never a problem. Have it on my work computer and that's how I discovered one of our workstations had been hacked.
