Whenever I wanted to update my virus database on AVG Free Edition, I would just click on where it says it is out of date, then update it. Now when I do it, it says it cant find an internet connection, and for me to go to their website. Well dont you know it; their site isnt letting me download either. I got like 99% done the update file when the download froze, now it wont even let me start it up again. In AVG itself, I unchecked where it says I confirm dial-up connection, since I'm on cable.
I dunno whats going on but it's irritating me.
Thanks for listening.

Firewall issue maybe?
Maybe their servers and mirrors are busy?
If you got a firewall, disable it and try downloading the updates.
Other than this, I really got no clue. HTH's though

I was having trouble downloading updates last week via the autoupdate thing. No problems downloading from the website, of course, I use getright to download stuff so I usually wouldn't notice any slowdowns or anything. |

I also have a hard time getting updates. Once it starts (when it starts), it always completes for me.
I hope for those who have it that the paid edition has a better update service. |

*side note* that is why I don't run AVG anti-virus. I find their updating system to be very unreliable.

Hope this is Ok??? If not, please feel free to delete.
Go to your AVG folder and rename the file url.ini to url.iniold, then open notepad and copy this:
[SERVER_NAME]
1=free_grisoft
2=ftp_grisoft
3=www_grisoft
4=akamai_grisoft
[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
4=http://www.grisoft.com/akm/softw/60/xx/
Actual URL=4
Then save it as url.ini and move it to your AVG folder. You should be happier afterwards, I was.

Nice, Rick:
How did you find that out?? I recently was also having that updating problem. Prior to that everything was fine. So did Grisoft change something? If you downloaded and installed a current "free" version, do you think the problem would still exist? Just curious.
I did purchase the Pro upgrade, and everything works great now.
Just thought I'd do my part to support someone who supplies free programs to individuals.

Hi Bill, I was having the same problems with updates that these folks were and a friend on another board gave me a modification that worked for a few days. When it started having similar problems, a Google search turned this up on some other message board and it has been working well for me.
I've read that Free AVG has gotten so popular that their servers are getting a constant hammering. I suspect these additional download addresses are probably for their paying customers, however I can't verfy that.
When I first started having problems getting the updates, I did install the newest version I could find and it had the same problems. Seems with the free version you are limited to the CZ download site. I find the AKAMAI site to be the best.
BTW, the CZ site will eventually update you, it just got to be very annoying with all the time outs and can't connects and such. Anyways, I hope this helps someone and that it stays up and viable. I like AVG better than any other AV program around, but I do want to know it's up to date.
