Welcome to Tech!

Does your old HD has a Win XP? Set ur old HD as master and log on. Your partition on the old HD might have been a NTFS format (instead of FAT 32, a standard format). Right click on them chosen files while ur at Windows Explorer, that you want to access later on ur new HD, then go to Properties. Set it as neutral or without security lock. I've done this before but I can't remember the exact thing, so I'm telling you what I remember but the rest, you know what to do. When everythings done, log off and then install ur new HD and log on, see if you can access to ur old folder.

Your new HD may be a FAT 32 format, and it can't access into your old files in ur old HD without permission.

How many partitions do you have in your old HD? If 2 (C: and D: on your old HD), try transfer the chosen files into a safe place (make a special folder or something) that is in FAT 32 format. Then you may format the partition that is in NTFS format to change it into FAT 32, so that there'll be no problem later.

Let us know if theres any problem or further details.

Tried your method...still not working !

Wat happened previously was...i downloaded BoostXP and did some tweak and stuff. After that, when i restarted my pc my my display setting colour quality went down to 4 bit (the lowest) and the icons and words appeared bigger than usual. I dunno whether its a virus or i deleted some windows files.

Now, I followed yr instruction and set my old HD as master. When i logged onto my account the following msg appeared:

C: Documents and Setting/Wineglass/Desktop not accessible.

Insufficient system resources exixt to complete the requested service.

Then when i tried to reboot into 'safe mode' I get this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)/windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe

and after the msg the pc hung. The forward slashes are supposed to be backward slashes as my backward slash key is not working properly. I also confirm my file system in the old HD was Windows XP NTFS system.

icer, even if the new xp install is on a fat32 partition, it will still access any other ntfs partitions. it is purely a matter of file permissions, in this case.
wineglass, did you choose to use encryption to make your files more secure? if not, then log in as an administrator (your standard account probably has admin rights, unless you wanted any form of security) right click on the folders or files in question, and somewhere in the properties should be an option to take ownership of these files or folders. you will need to switch off simple file sharing, if it is on. you can search windows help, or these forums for more detailed instructions.

change your drives so the new one is primary master, again. if you had had the old drive on the system when you installed xp on the new drive, it would have probably offered to keep your old windows install bootable. not an important point, now, but it may have helped with data recovery, back then.

Thanks a million !!!

Thank you so much guys. Yr help was indeed very useful. Thought it never really solved my problem, it gave me some guidelines as to how to solve the prob. I did some magic and somehow retrieved all my files. Thanks again !
