Help With "Spyware"

Hi ...

I have Norton Internet Security and Windows XP SP1 running on PC1. I have a linksys wireless router. I think I have some sort of "spyware" and I can't find it to delete it.

This is what happens ....

Internet Explorer: If I type in an address in the address bar without typing - "http://" - Internet Explorer automatically takes me to a variety of "search pages". For example: nkvd.us, or skcs.com (I think that's it).

I've run Norton Antivirus and Spyware Locator a countless number of times but it doesn't find anything. Is it possible that this spyware is located in my router? When I upgraded my firmware I saw that address in the registry or something - the www.skcs.com.

I don't know if I'm explaining it well ..... if anyone can shed some light on this that would be wonderful.

Run these six programs, in this order, with all of them FULLY updated. You'll be fine after that:

1.) Spybot S&D
2.) Adaware
3.) HiJackThis (post log here if you need help)
4.) CWShredder
5.) KazaaBeGone
6.) Spysweeper by WebRoot

Run these from safe mode in that order. 30 minutes and you'll be done. Google search those that aren't readily available from download.com

That's an indicator of a CWS hijacking.

There's a new version of CWShredder out...2.0

Run CWShredder.

CWShredder download link


Unzip the program to a permanent folder of your choosing. Close ALL (except CWShredder )browser windows and click "FIX".

After it's done running click on "How do I prevent re-infection?" and, at a minimum, click on "Go Download the ByteVerifier patch on Microsoft.com"

wups ... sorry for the repeat post. I'm new here and actually posted this thread up in the Networking forum, so I was unaware of the "sticky" thread.

either way .... I want to thank all of you for your assistance. I ran all 6 programs and removed tons of spyware and related stuff from my PC. From what I can see - everything seems to be running fine now.

Before we start, let's disable your System Restore. After the infection's been cleaned re-enable system restore.

IF, for some reason, you lose the ability to use IE or lose your internet connection...open HJT-->"Config"-->"Backups"-->"Restore".


Open HiJackThis. Click "Scan". Put a checkmark next to these:

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search under "More advanced search options", make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on "My Computer". Go to "Tools" ---> "Folder Options". Click on the "View" tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also, uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"

Click "Apply" then "OK".

Find and delete this file:

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run, enter %temp% and then click Edit > Select All and delete the contents.


How to delete Windows Temp files in Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT or Windows ME


Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\ <all users>\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Now click the "Delete Cookies" button and click OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin.


Restart to normal mode.


Post another HJT log.
