How you guys protect your computers?
Hi.
I would like to make a small survey.
The questions are:
1. how do you protect your own computer? Will you configure your computer to max. security?
2. what security software do you use to protect your computer? List all of them.
Some hints to make you recall easily:
- anti-virus
- anti-trojan
- anti-keylogger
- firewall
- anti-spyware
- anti-malware
- and so on
3. I know some people who use a lot of anti-spyware programs to protect them:
- For scannning: 2 to 4 or even more Anti-spyware (eg Ad-aware & Spybot S&D & SpySweeper & Pest Patrol)
- For real-time protecton: Spyblaster and SpyGuard
What do you think?
Is it necessary to do so?
Will you do so and why?
4. *New Questions*
By the way, does anyone know whether there's good free online AS scans?
Happy New Year!

Linksys and antivirus. Maybe an ad-aware scan every now and then.

1. Weekly scan with Ad-aware SE and Spybot.
2. I use Firefox, making #1 almost redundant.
3. Behind a router firewall, no need for a software firewall.
4. AV program, though I'm still trying to find a good one. I tried AVG, but it couldn't ever remove viruses, so I tried AntiVir, which detected some new ones when I installed it. Now I'm trying out Mcafee to see how much I like it. |

Zonealarm
Symantec Antivirus
Firefox(important!)
Latest WinXP updates
And most important of all... common sense! Like not clicking on something that says:
XXX! Dialer! Free porno! Install? Yes/No

- install 1 AV program + run online free scan
Different AV programs cover different viruses database, so it is normal that the same case may happen to each program.
AVG and AntiVir score badly as far as I know.
Regarding removal of AV, in the ages where I used to use Norton SystemWorks, its Noron AV hardly remove any virus if I infected. I turned to online scans, and they could help me to remove the viruses which Norton couldn't.
However thinking twice now, although they claimed that they could remove the virus, it didn't mean they really did. I read some reports. They said it was possible that the programs may destory/damage your files during the removal. Some claimed they succeeded, but not in fact.
So the best to remove virus when infected might be:
Safest: completely remove and reinstall the whole system (if you use imaging regularly, and make sure your image is clean)
Less safe: use virus removal tools specifically for that virus; or COMPLETELY removed the infected files (Note: Your delete button don't remove well. You need some programs to help), and put the clean ones back. |
