| Norton vs AVG FREE Edition
I came across something that I found rather odd today...I ran a scan on my wife's XP Home laptop with Norton Antivirus 2004 (latest defs) and it came up clean. I installed the latest AVG FREE Edition, updated the defs, and its scan revealed 3 viruses.
I'm sorry that I didn't write down what they were, but I do remember that one was a trojan Downloader.Small.28.K deep inside the C:\System Volume Information\_restore{(insert bunch of numbers) folder.
Oh...and her system runs A LOT faster now!
Just some FYI to chew on.
Later,
Mike |

Not too much of a surprise to me. Norton sucks! A huge resource hog. Been using AVG for quite some time now, and will not use anything else.

Norton and McAfee both suck. Both resource hogs, both miss some virus's that AVG and Antivir find. I like Antivir (try it once) http://www.free-av.com/ but AVG is just as good. |

I don't see any differences worth paying for to get AVG Pro. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/11/lng/us/tpl/v5 Quote:
These are some of the great additional features that you can get in the Professional Edition:
* Support of multiple languages: English, German, Czech, Slovak, French, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese are supported at the present time; additional languages are planned or already under development
* Access to guaranteed high-speed servers for downloading updates and program upgrades
* Technical support via e-mail (24x7x365) provided by experienced anti-virus specialists
* Options for configuring multiple program and test settings
* The ability to create user-defined tests and schedules
* Discount programs for schools, charities and other not-for-profit organizations
* and additional functionality
| Just what is "additional functionality"? Will it protect me from viruses better than the FREE edition will?
What do you guys think?
Xtreeme, I checked out your link...saw this review on download.com Quote:
Pros: Quick scanning.Low resource user.Finds many many viruses, trojans etc.
Cons: A little ugly(but hey).No e-mail scanning.Do yourselves a favour and download this beauty!

avg does have e-mail protection...atleast the new version does!! . Also...if you want to see what virii it removed open the test center and go to test results...double click the scan you ran (it will run 1 every day and any scan that it finds virii on will have a red icon instead of a green one that's the easiest way to find it!!) then scroll down and it should tell you there |

Does it matter in this case? IF you open mail-your opening a file hence its scanned. Any file even moved and antivir scans it! So its a bit redundant don't you think? And anyhow what email server you have WITHOUT virus scanner built in anyways? Even my personal email server scans it all server side. BUT some are hidden in the attachment and are missed-thats where antivir finds them. Also like I said to read it-you pc opened the file. It scans all opened or moved files. Hence it is scanned. LOL. The moment I open a virus infected email the alarm goes off-it wont let it run. It asks what to do with the offensive file. I tell it to delete or wipe-then its gone. No biggy never even got into my pc.

I have been a Norton fan for a while now and recently installed AVG Free Edition and love it. I think it is a great program for no cost. Fast and great for the power users!

I don't like AntiVar though. Always seem to have problems with it comparision to everything else. |
