AVG Anti-Virus or Norton Anti-Virus 2005?
Hi. I installed AVG Anti-Virus on my pc as suggested by my brother-in-law. Prior to AVG, I had Norton Anti-Virus 2005 installed. Does anyone know if one is better than the other? I still have my Norton installed, but it's always AVG that I see updating and running. Is it a problem to have two anti-viruses running on one machine? I was thinking that it would give me even higher security, but now I wonder if it's necessary or if there are any disadvantages to running two separate anti-virus programs on one pc. I would sure appreciate a reply, I don't want to 'confuse' my pc or impact my processing speed. Thanks!

You only want one AV program running on your pc. Two can cause conflicts.
NAV2005 is a great antivirus program, but it is a resource hog. I had a p4 with 386mb of ram. After I installed NAV2005, my pc couldn't do much of anything but sit there and run the av prog. My Norton subscription expires at the end of this year & I've been using AVG since January.
IMO if you don't have a gig of ram & a really fast processor, you don't want NAV2005. Otherwise it's a great program. What computer do you have? And please don't say a white one. - Sheldon Cooper

It's not perfect but it does seem to be better than Norton. It does alert well when a virus attacks your system as the real-time scanning does work.Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you,

Thanks, all. I wondered about a conflict and the RAM. I think I'll stick with AVG and uninstall Norton. I appreciate all the information and advice. Thanks!

After using Norton AV for years, I tried AVG. It found 2 trojans that Norton missed. Beyond being a resource hog, I think there are better anti-virus programs out there than Norton.

I have Norton 2005 installed on my
p4
3.0ghz
512mb ram and honestly have discovered not one negative. but of coarse i have about 8 running processes 40,000,000 - 50,000,000 memory usage showing in code-stuff starter all from Norton. which I can only imagine the performance gain my computer would have after uninstalling Norton. i read that it is hard to completely uninstall or to totally delete Norton. do you think going with NOD32 would be a good idea? any recommendations would be great!

i've found avg to be more thorough by far. as for helpmetweaks post....the nod32 anti-virus engine is one of the strongest out there. It's supposed to be better than avg, but then again, finding the virus is only half the battle. Personally for usability I recommend avg to EVERYONE. It's free...automatically updates and scans once a day, and seems to be much more thorough than norton! Some day i'd love to build a chart of all the virii I can find out there and check off if norton, avg, and some others find it....something really serious...not jsut a cheep thing like i'd have to do now. lol. Anyways...from my experience....whenever I get an infected computer as a tech...the first thing i ask is what av they're using and then I ask if they mind if I replace it. I love avg
lol.

Ok, I uninstalled the Nortons (and the F-Secure on my lappy, another AV program resource hog similar to Norton) AND MY GOD, I cleansed my computer from the devils! I noticed they have a faster start-up once I log on! I swear, its almost like I got a RAM upgrade...

NORTON=BAAAAAAAD
AVG?=w00t-tastic (Loveable <3)
Thank goodness I went to Techimo today.

I personally use Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition. Problem is, it is only available in 5-packs (as far as licenses), which could add up quick (couple hundred bucks).
It's great too! I got unlimited updates. And, it takes up very little resources... Usually... the old version (7.x) took up a ton of resources occasionally (in XP), but 9.x is sweet.

Make sure you guys are TOTALLY removing Norton properly! A simple uninstallation is not enough.

I have Norton on an AMD K6-2 CPU. Should I move to PC-Chillin? Or, Mcafee?
