database encrpytion

I have a security question. We are discussing various encrpytion issues in one of my classes and we ran into an interesting question. What does the phrase "Encrypt a database" mean. After some pondering and reading several white papers on 'where' to encrypt a database (file level, record level, field level, etc) we were tasked to go out and find some information on things that do these and discuss them next class. I know quite a bit about file level encrpyion (or at least how to do it with PGP, GPG...) but as for the other ones are there any programs or anything I can read about? Anyone got good links or experiences they could share?

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this would fall under "full disk encryption" or not.
Run a google search on "Encrypt a database" lots of pages come up.
BTW, evidently there are some major corporations that don't know what it means either.
