| Please help ASAP :-( weird Symantec pop-ups...
A couple of months ago I had a virus of some sort (something to do with "media-motors") and I was being helped with another support forum to remove it from my computer. I think it's gone but I am not completely sure. Anyway, before I got their help, I tried removing it on my own and I think I might have deleted something that I shouldn't have touched. Either that or the virus is still affecting the system. My laptop (which is a laptop my university gave me) seems to be running slower. Also, whenever I right-click on anything, a box pops up that is entitled "Windows Installer" and reads: "Preparing to install Symantec Client Security." I let that process and then another box pops up entitled: "Symantec Client Security" and reads: "Please wait while Windows configures Symantec Client Security. Gathering required information..." After that another one comes up entitled: "Symantec Client Security" and reads "Please wait while Windows configures Symantec Client Security." Then finally one entitled "Symantec Client Security" and reads: "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Symantec Client Security' disk and click OK." I don't have the disk because the university gave us the laptops with everything installed on it. And I'm not even doing anything that requires Symantec Client Security, so I have no idea why this pops up. As I said, this problem started months ago and I became frustrated with not knowing how to fix it so I haven't turned on the laptop until now. So recently another box pops up when I boot up and get to the desktop that's entitled: "Old Virus Definition File" that says: "The virus definition file used is more than 90 days old. Updating to a new virus definition file will help catch the most recent viruses" (and below that there's an option "Don't remind me again until after next update."). I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem--I'm not even sure what it is. Well, hopefully I made some sense in this post and I really wish someone can help me!! Thanks so much for reading this, it's so greatly appreciated!!
PS: I hope I posted this topic in the right forum! If not, I'm so sorry and please let me know where it's better to post it! Thanks... |

Hmm, it seems like your Symantec security seems to be screwed up somehow.. did you fiddle around with anything in the registry editor?
You can ask the university to let you borrow a disk, so you can uninstall and reinstall it, right?
Not to be mean in anyway, but all that Symantec stuff is a resource hog. I'd get rid of it right away.
Are you allowed to uninstall all of that Symantec stuff in your laptop? Because I know a much better anti-virus solution for you, and its free on updates and such FOR LIFE. |

Symantec wasn't fully installed. Everytime you rightclik, the system is trying to activate a section of the program that should be visable when you rightclik - like a menu item called 'scan for Viruses'. Sounds like you need the CD to finish that install, update your virus dats, do a full scan. Then, run an anti-spyware program and then probably also defrag your harddrive.
ALso depends on what other items you have in the startup folder and the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run folder in the registry. If you have a lot of items starting up when the laptop does, it will drain your overall performance.
Oh, and BTW - Welcome to Techimo! |

I would add that the virus definition files should updated regularly, probably weekly if you do it manualy. That is why norton is telling you it is 90 days old.
I don't use norton either. Waste of money IMO. No matter what virus program you use, you have to keep it updated. |
