Virus??

hey.
i turned my PC on today and was greeted with a screen that had lots of coloured squares at the botton, with different characters (A-Z) and numerous symbols. all coloured and flashing the rest of the screen is black.

the startup of the PC stops dead, when this screen comes up.
i can get round this, and boot the PC, but if i was to leave it to boot on its own, it would get no where.

does anyone know what it causing this. i have run avast and deleted all infected files, but the problem persists.
thanks in advanve for any help on this matter.

How many files did you have that where infected and to you remember what virus it was? What are you doing to get the computer to boot?

Some virus's will alter files and the removal instuctions can require a bit more then just deleting the files. Most A/V sites have detailed instructions for removing this kind of virus.

Suggestion

Try this:

Since you said you can get around the boot process....load your operating system.

When on, run MSCONFIG and view what programs are set to run on startup. If there's one that's located in Windows/System, bet it's your culprit.

If not, check the TASK MANAGER for running processes that you don't believe should be there.

If you find something, somebody here can guide you on removing the bad registry keys or files manually. (Not to demean your pc skills in any way).

I think there was about 4/5 files i deleted, but i cant remember what they were called.

to get the system to boot, i have to press escape, to get onto a boot menu, from which i can choose which drive to boot from. HD, DVD-RW,DVD-ROM. So i boot from HD and can get onto the PC. its just when i dont press the escape button, that the PC wont load, and i get all those coloured squares.

sorry if im not being that clear.
thanks
