the ones used in schools cost 1000s of dollars (although most is for network functionality) so if you're complaining about $35 nothing is going to be even close to as good as the ones in schools, but even then they are not perfect
best thing out there is just keeping an eye on them yourselfHey who turned sigs on?

netdog porn filter
you can use "NetDog Porn Filter" ( http://www.netdogsoft.com ) ,
NetDog is an excellent little program, it will block all porn websites automatically and quitely in the background when anyone's on the internet. It works very well, strongly recommend it.

The most popular HOSTS file will block calls to lots of porn sites and it's free and updated monthly. Just search on HOSTS with google, etc. and you'll find it.

Why cant you just let them have their porn!!!!!!
The WILL find a way around the filter and get to it anyway, so my opinion is just let them have it.Patience takes too long.

I'll admit that 11 is a little young. But you have to keep in mind that they are looking at it because they are curious. It might be best to just talk to then about what they are viewing and note that this is NOT what sex is all about. At that age their only reason for viewing porn would be curiosity. If you answer all the questions he/she has then there will be no need for a pr0n blocker.
Patience takes too long.

Thanks for that informative post.
I suppose that's your opinion, but not everyone agrees with you. I personally don't use a porn blocker for my kids, but the computer with Internet access is in the family room and their usage is pretty well monitored. If I found a good free one though, I'd probably install it just to be safer...

If you are still using IE, they have a content controller on there that works pretty well
Like howste, putting the computer in an area that the whole family can see will stop.
Holmes, if you have nothing important to give to a thread with someone asking for help i suggest you not post. Also perhaps when you get a little older and have some kids you will think differently when it comes to porn.

January 20th, 2007, 12:15 PM #11This is probably the best advice any parent can get. This thing about giving every kid their own computer in the privacy of their bedroom is a really bad idea. I'm sure your kids would never do anything bad with this freedom, but other's will.

Milwaukee, I use the host file below, it does a great job, and is updated often.

If im not wrong Vista has alot of parental control options. You could try that if you run Vista.
It IS true that kids will find many ways to get around even the most expensive blockers though. Especially the older ones. Like at my old school most of the school's compters had limited access to even things like game websites but people found ways to get around it. Like I remember for a month or two typing two dots before com, for example techimo..com, allowed you to go to any website you wanted. Lol then they found out about it. Then people found out ways to get around the security locks and passwords and stuff.i5 3750 | ASUS P75 | GTX560Ti | 8gb Corsair Vengence

I do it for free with DNS servers.

OpenDNS seems particularly simple to bypass (most proxies, particularly CGI and SOCKS proxies can be configured to use the remote DNS - CGI does by default - FF setting "network.proxy.socks_remote_dns" = "true" can as well ;-)
The HOSTS file can be circumvented in pretty much the same manner.
And, oh yeah, let's not forget the cacheing abilities of modern search engines (Ask.com even gives an on-page preview, or you can extend Firefox to do the same for Google and Yahoo! with GooglePreview). Further, one can use QuickPageZoom to zoom into those tiny thumbnails up to 300X!
...and it's all possible with a restricted user account in any operating system...
I agree with the dumbasses: talk to your kids about what their curious about; porn or otherwise.

So it better wait until they are old enough to understand what pOrn is.

It's probably highly rated because of the level of violence. The story is decent.
