| ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite vs Agnitum Outpost Pro
My question is for those who familiar with ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite, and Agnitum Outpost Pro Firewall. My subscription with ZoneAlarm just expired and I'm giving Outpost Pro a try for 30 days. The only reason I like ZoneAlarm SS because it offers Anti-Phishing, Privacy Protection, Spy Site Blocking, and the triple defense firewall. Sounds like a lot of bullshit but it works. Except I did not care for its anti-virus and anti-spyware protect. That’s where NOD32 and Spyware doctor comes in. But for the past year I've been hearing a lot good things about Outpost. Since I'm new to this program will it offer better protection over ZA? |

right now i'm running sunbelt - kerio personal firewall free edition. It works great for what I need it for. It filters inbound and outbound traffic and has program controls. It protects against buffer overflows and code injections, it's free, and it allows me to set up advanced rules based on ip, subnet, ip range, port, or just about anything else you could think of . I found outpost overly complicated (though it was a while ago and i was a even more of a rookie at that time), i found zone alarm slowed my internet down WAY too much....and unfortunately sygate, which was my favorite, was bought by norton. I'd actually gone a while without any firewall and didn't have an issue. I just started using one again when I found kerio. anyways....if i had to pick between the two it would depend completely on what options i needed. for a server...I'd most definately pick outpost as I found it had many more options than za, however za was much easier to be used by an average user and if it's on a desktop that'll be changing daily then i'd use za. |

Hello,
My friend and I, got into a discussion about Firewalls not too long ago; and it bascially came down to...he said/she said. You're going to get different opinions on this. What works for one person, and their system, may not work for you, and your system. The best thing to do is download the trial versions, and figure out which one suits your needs, and how it runs on your system. There is also the how much do you want to pay factor, and do you really need all of the bells and whistles in the product (Spyware guards etc). There are programs (free/paid) out there that handle spyware protection that are just as good (if not better) than those installed in security protection suites.
I personally use Symantec Firewall Corporate Edition. For the anti-spyware protection I'm using Spybot Search & Destroy, and Spyware Blaster (both free), and I'm using Firefox 1.5.x.x. no problems yet. I run security checks on my system twice a month, and my anti-virus once a week to make sure every is running okay.
After you install which ever firewall you want to use/test out, go to one of these sites (or all of them) to check the firewall configuration. http://scan.sygatetech.com/ http://www.dslreports.com/scan http://www.auditmypc.com/
They will give you a detail report of your firewall...what ports you have open, and stealthed...etc. This way you can actually see how your firewall is protecting your system.
I hoped this helped.
Take Care
