This is driving me mad! My desktop PC won't display certain types of advertising graphics. If I visit the same sites on the same network using the same ISP with my laptop I can see the graphics with no problem.
I have Symantec Internet Security which I have disabled to no effect. windows firewall is disabled. I am running IE 7.0 but I only upgraded yesterday and had the same problem with IE 6.
I am designing a website that features advertisments - that I can't see, either in my browser, or in Frontpage, of even when I save an (invisible) image in any other programme!!!!
It may help to know that I cannot launch an FTP site in WIndows Explorer from IE 7.0 but I can do this on my laptop on the same network.
I am not a novice - but I am really stuggling to find out what is going on. I have changed the Windows security settings to minimum, but still I can't se the graphics. I know they are there becase of the HTML code, and because they are surrounded by a border, and even carry the hyperlink.
HELP! |

Are you at home or running through a proxy server at work? |

Do you have one of the custom HOSTS files installed? If your HOSTS file is larger than a few kBytes then you probably do. Those block many ad sites - I know because I use one and won't see most of your ads if I was to visit your site...
Thanks for reminding me - I have to go pick up the latest HOSTS file to block yet more crapola! Sorry, Charlie...

Thanks for trying - I checked and I don't have a custom hosts file, and I am on my home broadband connection, therfore no proxy. Anyhow, when I use my laptop on the same connection through the wireless router I can see the images just as intended.
All other thoughts welcome. I am running XP with SP2. |

Some browsers have built-in ad/banner/pop-up blockers like the Mozilla ones (Firefox/Mozilla/Seamonkey). IDK, if they are enabled by default though. And there are plenty of other installable programs that do similar functions (internet security, etc.). Check to see what differences there are between the computers in startup programs - use msconfig or one of the third party monitors like Startup Control Panel. Plus some smart viruses/worms/trojans block competitors ad sites. One I just read about installs a modified version of Kaspersky to get rid of competitors trojans, etc. while being blind to the perp's malware.
