Ok, I've had this problem for months, ever since I tried to download a program from Isohunt.
First of all I found multiple svchost.exe files running in my windows task manager, yet none of the programs I tried are able to detect it. There's 3 running on SYSTEM, 2 on NETWORK SERVICE, and 2 on LOCAL SERVICE. (I'm currently trying to fix this part myself by looking at the other threads, but I posted this too since it might be the cause of some of the problems)
My windows explorer is bugged, sometimes when I start my computer, it doesn't even load, other times my computer doesn't work properly at startup because it can't load for whatever reason. Sometimes I get an error message at startup, and it freezes my computer.
My internet explorer is also bugged, I don't use it but I thought the info might help.
My desktop is under a wallpaper that I've never seen before. I can't click through it and it's there about 50% of the time at startup, the other 50% I get a blank white screen and sometimes the windows explorer bar actually loads along with my desktop, when I get the blank screen, it won't let me change the backround, the buttons are faded.
The weird part about this is; the picture, it's a low quality stretched picture of an old red car on the road... It looks like a porsche. I'm sure that I've never seen this picture before I had this problem.
This has been driving me insane. It usually takes about 10 restarts for my computer to actually work after startup (When it fails the computer freezes or it keeps on loading something without stop, or the picture covers everything), but now the picture is ALWAYS there and I can't access any program without the help of Windows Task Manager (From ctrl+alt+del) I tried to use the windows button on my keyboard, but it doesn't work. EDIT: Almost forgot, I tried to fix this by turning automatic updates for windows on, but that made things worse. Now it says that I don't have an original legitimate copy of windows or something!
Please, help. The biggest problem is the wallpaper covering everything.. Then the Windows Explorer..

1) it's completely normal to have multiple instances of svchost running under different users. every (Windows) computer will look the same in that respect.
2) to take care of your other problems, i recommend downloading PEBuilder. you can use it to boot your computer separately from the hard drive, which is incredibly useful for deleting stubborn files. you download the program, create an ISO (CD image) file, burn it to CD, and then boot your computer with it.
to find out what you need to delete, i recommend the excellent program by Sysinternals called Autoruns. it allows you to view every file that's set to run on startup, complete with details like the author of each file etc. go to options > hide microsoft entries and rescan - look for files that have no author. some are fine, some are not, so googling them is always a good idea. once you find the bad ones, don't directly go and try to delete them. write them down (all of them) (most will likely be in windows\system32) and then boot your computer with the BartPE disk you made from the prior paragraph. find the files with the command line and delete them.
if you need more details on the above things i said, just post back.
oh yes, as to your desktop - right click on it and go to properties (alternately, go to control panel > display). select the "desktop" tab, then click on the "customize desktop..." button. on the next window, click the "web" tab, and uncheck any of the boxes you see.

Thanks for the info, I'm working on those.
But about the desktop; I can't even click on the desktop, as there is no desktop and there's no toolbar either, something is overlapping them. I can't right click on anything >_> |

can you access the start button? if so, use the control panel to access the display properties, as i described above. you could also do start > run and type in "desk.cpl" or create a batch file with nothing but "desk.cpl" inside it.
EDIT: or by "there's no toolbar", do you mean there's no taskbar, meaning no start button either? if that's the case, explorer might not be running (as you've mentioned earlier). start explorer by opening the task manager, going to the applications tab, then clicking the "new task" button. you can start explorer by just typing explorer in the box that comes up (you could also type "desk.cpl" into this box as well).

Yeah, wow thanks, that was easy.
The only thing I have access to when I startup my computer is the Task window, and yes I just tried typing that in and it worked
But I checked out the web section and there's nothing checked, theres no websites listed either.
EDIT: on the Desktop section of the Display Properties window, everything but customize desktop is faded out.

did the task bar and all your icons come back when you ran "explorer"?
EDIT: i have to go for now, but i'll get back to this as soon as i can. it sounds like something i could solve rather easily in first person, but as it is i can only tell you what to try i'll keep following this thread until we get you patched up nicely.

i see now. the options are greyed out because your background choice is set to "none" - choose a picture and the options should come back.
how are the other things coming along (with BartPE and Autoruns)? when we get your computer "cleaned" we can then start to figure out why explorer's not running automatically and how to go about fixing it.
EDIT: sorry, i was wrong. after examining your screencap some more, i realized that other things were greyed out as well, which does point to screwy group policy settings, as i originally guessed. i'm glad you have xp pro and not home, since pro has the group policy editor - home does not have gp editor, but still allows certain group policies to be set
anyway...i believe this will fix your desktop problem: run "gpedit.msc" using your preferred method. expand user configuration, administrative templates, then control panel. left click on the display folder and look at the values in the window to the right. disable any that may be set, specifically "prevent changing wallpaper". go back to the tree to the left and expand desktop, which is right above control panel. left click on active desktop and make sure none of those values are set either.
