Virus damage hard drive?

I did an upgrade to my avg and when it finished it kicked up with a trojan warning and asked for action. I said heal and then it wanted me to reboot it so I did. That was it. I can't use my drive at all. Windows cd, startup floppies, and disk managers doesn't see the drive. I'm using my old drive (glad I kept it) and here I am. So can a virus physically damage the drive? This here's about a year old more or less.

Yea it did see it in bios. By the way I found the disk that came with the drive and created a floppy disk. The scan came out clean and I had the option of zeroing the drive so I used it. I got the drive back but all the data are gone. This time I partitioned the drive and all the files that needs burning are going to the F drive.

So I'm ok now. Thanks.

EDIT: I didn't see what the virus is, I just said clean it and move on.
