Got up this morning and discovered my Windows Defender anti-spyware is expired and won't re-install on Win2k. Good old Billy G. is at it again. Here is a work-around for everyone having the same problem.
Don't know if any of you guys have tried yet but the final version of Windows Defender does not install on Windows 2000 due to a limitation in the .MSI. All of the beta versions expire on 12-31-06 and you’ll need to get the final version.
If you download Orca (MSI editor) (go to google and type in ORCA.ZIP + MSI). Or download it here:
http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/Orca.zip
Then download Windows Defender. When you try to download Windows Defender the website will ask you to run the “validation tool”. You must do this.
Now install Orca.
Start Orca and select File and then Open and point it to the Windows Defender.MSI file.
In the left side of the window scroll down to Launch Condition
Highlight Launch Condition.
On the right-hand side of the screen you'll see: "VersionNT > 500". Right click on this value and choose CUT ROW.
Now go to the menu at the top of Orca’s window and select File and Save.
If you previously had a beta version of Windows Defender installed you already have the GDI+ files installed. If not you need to install it to run Windows Defender.
Like the previous Beta of Defender you'll need GDI+:

Copy this .dll to your \WINNT\System32 directory.
I just finished installing Windows Defender, it just finished updating and I am now running a spyware scan.
Enjoy!
