| Windows defender etc...
I just installed windows defender - a) is it any good and b) when i click the "x" button does it close or does it minimize somewhere - I still see it in my taskmanager but is it still running live.
Also I'm running ad-aware ad watch and this thing super slows my computer down is there a way round this. I have 2gig memory. Or should I stop some of my anti-spy anti-virus anti everything.
I have NOD32, Ad-aware, Spybot and windows defender running. Is all this really needed. I run all due to my computer acting up a bit. My IE automatically goes to microsoft site even AFTER I changed my bookmark back to google for eg. How do I stop this.?
Please advise
Thx

At work we install laptops with windows XP, Norton antivirus and windows defender.
We found that this combi keeps almost everything, if not everything outside.
Defender is a nice program, works great, is not a resourcehog. For antivirus, I use hitman pro from time to time, it is a great program, but kind of a resourcehog, so I always let it run overnight, which works great.

Install Startup CPL It will install to the controll panel with an icon called Startup. Find the programs that are starting up and un-click them.
Ad-aware is a service that starts up every time you start the computer. As does windows defender I'm sure. I do not have the full version of Ad-aware so I set the service to run in manual mode. If this is true, then do the following:
Go to Start | Run type in Services.msc, press OK.
It is most likely the first service as it' alphabetically ordered. It is called Ad-Aware. Double click it and select manual for startup type, click apply. You can also stop the service to then click OK.
Do not mess with other services! Unless you know what they are for. Quote: |
Is all this really needed.
| No! I just have Ad-Aware, (SPYbot is good to keep on hand) and A-Squared. Just keep a hold on their startup services.
In IE go to Tools | Internet Options | Click the General tab. There you can set the home page. Refer to image. Spybot may be reseting the page too. Look at its options.
I personally use Firefox and a couple of Add-ons called Ad Block and No Script No Script takes some know how. I have several others, but that is all you would need really. Grease Monkey offers much more, but takes know how.
Your main thing you need is a firewall if you are concerned about Ads, spyware, maleware, etc. But running a firewall doesn't mean anythijng if you allow the scripts to run. Hench noscript. I personally don't care what Firewall you use, so long as you got one. I find Comodo to be superb at this very thing. www.Comodo.com http://www.malwarehelp.org/ And this too
