| Your tires are gonna rat you out (part two)! Yes they are: Quote: Tracking Vehicles through Tire Pressure Monitors
Just another example of our surveillance future:Each wheel of the vehicle transmits a unique ID, easily readable using off-the-shelf receiver. Although the transmitter’s power is very low, the signal is still readable from a fair distance using a good directional antenna.
Remember the paper that discussed how Bluetooth radios in cell phones can be used to track their owners? The problem with TPMS is incomparably bigger, because the lifespan of a typical cell phone is around 2 years and you can turn the Bluetooth radio off in most of them. On the contrary, TPMS cannot be turned off. It comes with a built-in battery that lasts 7 to 10 years, and the battery-less TPMS sensors are ready to hit the market in 2010. It does not matter how long you own the vehicle * -- transportation authorities keep up-to-date information about vehicle ownership. |

Ahh, yes! That's the one. (Oh, the part two I missed) Quote:

Apparently the tin foil hat thread is bugged.
It's interesting, bit I don't think it's going to "rat you out" I mean on what? That you can't maintain your tire pressure? Tracking, mmmm I guess it's a possibility. Encryption I guess would be the answer.
BTW, No one is concerned about the RFID chips in games and DVDs you buy?

It could be a good way of finding stolen vehicles. Although, removing the TPMS takes a long as it does to remove the actual wheel from the car, so as soon as your car is stolen, the theives are going to put a new set of rims on.

Who really cares? If you've got nothing to hide then it doesn't matter. If you do, then most of society will be glad there is an extra method of tracking you.

I still don't like the idea of being tracked though unless I have been told of the uses, etc., etc., etc.
It's bad enoough that we have "OnStar" tracking us wirh speed, location. etc. Not to mention the PCM/BCM can be pulled by the insurance companies that can show the vehicle paramaters at time of accident. (Only certain vehicles form '97 - current.)
Glad I am being tracked? Not a chance! I don't like being an unwitting participant in anything!

Glad I am being tracked? Not a chance! I don't like being an unwitting participant in anything! | There are pros and cons to both sides of the story. You have got to weigh both to see which gives the msot benefits.
While having OnStar tracks your speed and makes sure you don't go on a high speed joyride, it also alerts the authorities if you have been in a car accident (probably from going on that high speed joyride) and could save your life. |
