Troj/Dwnldr-GWS

My wife recently played on my computer and downloaded some file. It was loaded with all kinds of crap. I have fixed a good number of viruses, spyware, and registry keys...

I have run the following programs:

CA Anti-virus
CA Anti-Spyware
XoftSpy
noadware
Registry cleaner
hijackthis

the only program that catches a file with every scan is noadware.... it seems to always find Troj/Dwnldr-GWS in my registry keys. I delete it and after a restart it's back again.
Can someone help me rid this once and 4all?

---------

Another problem I'm having is that when I reboot my CPU upon loadup it shows me my desktop background (wallpaper) and all my icons....

then it flashes to a dark bluish or purplish screen and back to my actual wallpaper.....then that dark bluish color seems to border all my icons... I got rid of this once yet dont remember what I did. I deleted all my temp files and internet files and cookies... and a few other things that got rid of this the first time....

can anyone help me fix my PC??!! I have posted on other sites but yet not a person has replied.

In order for your AV to work properly you should disable System Restore first in Control Panel - System - System Restore.

Most of the time, viruses and trojans are kept there also and if you don't disable this function it will be back.

You can also scan your computer in Safe Mode, some AV also works that way.

Also there is associated Registry Keys that you can look and see if they are there:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\aoprndtws

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run\MemoryManager

That is from the Noadware web site

Good Luck

did all that... spyhunter helped me out the most. The only problem I have now is that I can't stop these stupid popups. It's leading me to Security-defender.com

anyone know where to find this and get rid of it?

You are using HijackThis, is there a chance that you visited this site: www.hijackthis.de to analyze the log ?

There is also Ad Aware 2007 free that may help you out

Bad infections almost always require a system reload. Believe it. I've been there.

Consider how much time and effort you've spent this far and how much more it's likely to take and compare that to estimated time to reinstall Windows.

I would cut my losses.

i would just cut my losses but when I moved from base to downtown and then moved once again I lost the windows cd somewhere.

Yeah I downloaded AdWare 2007 and it found more crap that the stuff I've PAID for hasn't.....that kinda ticks me off! Didnt even think about the site...stupid me, thanx!

:::EIDT:::

I posted the hijackthis logs and any file that some much as had a question mark I deleted and my PC runs perfect! It fixed everything that all the adware , anti-spyware, and anit-viruses could find or fix!

Thanx for all the help!

For the most part, when it comes to virus and spyware i don't pay for any software to take care of my computer, i use free stuff all the time and happy about it.

I've been using AVG, Ad Aware, CW Shredder, Spyware Blaster and HijackThis for a long time and i'm glad to say that my computer is running like a charm.

I have also CCleaner that i use from time to time but for the index.dat files that are a bunch with XP i paid and use Track Eraser Pro which is taking care of all traces that my activities are registering on the computer.

I keep everything fully updated including XP, defrag my drives every week end and i don't download music and never used software like Lime Wire and others because they are too dangerous. We all know that P2P software are not recommended.

With Vista, most of the software that i use are now compatible but i don't use Vista that much for now and i still have the trial version provides by MS. It looks that Windows 7 will be available sooner then expected so why buy Vista when i could wait for the next one and see what it will be.
