Avast is much better, I've had AVG before and now I have Avast and it's much better than AVG. I trust Avast a lot more than AVG, even more than a paid version of Norton.

I personally recommend AntiVir PE over Avast! Home Edition. I've heard bad things about the latest 8.0 version of AVG, too. After using it for a few years now I decided to switch so I couldn't decide between AntiVir and Avast for myself.

AntiVir has a higher detection rate due to it having a heuristic scanning engine which Avast lacks (only it's email scanning can do heuristic). It's less bloated, Avast takes up more resource usage. AntiVir has also a faster scanning engine. Avast has more features like the email scanning or better malware detection, but it's all up to you. The email scanning is beneficial if you use a desktop-based email like Outlook and not Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. The thing I probably disliked about AntiVir is that the updating can be slow sometimes, Avast updates more quickly as soon as it detects an internet connection present. And, not to mention there's a pop-up everytime there's an update like AVG had nagging you to upgrade to it's Pro version, there's a way around that however.
