Question
hired to spy on people

my boss has put in position to track down employees who may be abusing the internet... i know the standard of going thru cookies etc... and the index.dat file... what other things can i do? i know that this isnt 100% fool proof because on my computer i notice sites i never went to but yet there in my cookies such as popups that came up .... i don't want to accuse the user of visiting sites that they didn't goto ... any tools or different strategies i can attack this by?

don't even bother looking at cookies and all that junk, get a good software solution that tracks real time usage. I used Track4Win - Employee Monitoring, Anti-Internet Abuse and Time Tracking Software for Windows on my home pc for awhile, I recall a couple threads around with some other suggestions (might search it out) but thats the first on that comes to mind

If your Internet traffic is going through a firewall and it's not *that* much traffic, get the logs and go through them.

Another solution, get a proxy server that monitors everything and depending on the software, you can get alerts, summary reports and real time site blocking.
