    In Need of an AntiVirus

I've been anti virus and firewall free for 6 months now, (I only visit 3-4 trusted sites) and only using HJT for registry scans, but now my computer is going to be used by the "family". I wanted to know if there's a moderate to great free anti virus program that ONLY does scans. Ive tried AVG, and Avira, but they always have that extra protection garbage that pops up every 2 seconds when it realizes a new program it doesn't know much about. Plus, when I disable these 'services' the processes still leech memory. I just want an antivirus that JUST DOES SCANS, No extra garbage, no protection, no firewalls, just scans.... is that too much to ask?
    Hopefully free?

    Thanks in advance

IMO pretty pointless to use anything if you aren't wanting protection! For just scans why not go with an online scanner then Trend Micro HouseCall - Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan - Trend Micro USA

edit: it has been awhile since I've used AVG but doesn't it have the option to disable the program so there is no active scanning and only scan when you want it to?

Avast offers more protection than AVG (rootkits/spyware)...not sure about Avira.
avast! antivirus - high security and protection from malware with anti-spyware and anti-rootkit software built in

Yeah, I've tried the avast and avira, and they still have running protection processes in the background. And by no programs in the background, I don't mean scanning when I don't want it, I mean like with avg avgemc.exe etc. etc. Maybe its just OCD, but I dont like running unnecessary processes, no matter what. I try to keep only core processes and the process I am physically using running. I really do NOT want ANY protection.

But on this online scan,Trend Micro HouseCall, is this tested clean? Or is it one of those pop ups that come up?

With Avast you can shut the process off very easily, and I'm sure you can do the same with the others. However, a protected computer...is a happy computer.

I have definitely had the best experience with avast compared to the others.

If you are not going to use the real time scanner, an anti-virus is pretty much useless. By the time it infects your computer it is too late.

Trend Micro is a well known trusted company, housecall is only a web based solution that uses active x or java. Its not the most reliable solution but if you aren't going to install realtime software it can help detecting bugs you might have.

Pretty much my point, why bother with anything if you aren't doing it real time. Its like putting the condom on after sex

I'm asking for the morning after pill. Still works. Im not looking for major viruses, just trojans and ad cookies. I can still remove spyware/adware after the fact, and usually system restore if something really bad happens. Ill use the housecall. Thanks.

That doesn't help when you get infected and somebody harvests all of your passwords or even destroys important data.

Many viruses like to hide in the System restore and infect all saved points.
