File Privacy Options

Howdy,

Just wondering if there's any way to set files so they cannot be searched or found on a desktop without having authorization? There are certain documents etc. I'd like to keep private, but if you do a *.doc search on the drive they're located in you can just double click and you're right into the file.............I'm interested in finding out as even if they're set up as hidden files they'll still show up in this type of search. Thanks in advance for your help

Cheers,
Max

Hi,

You can only see files in a search that you can browse to, so if you have multiple user accounts on the computer then (by default) the other users wouldn't be able to gain access to the file.

If you are using Office, which the .DOC file is a part of, then you can apply a password to the file itself - so other users won't be able to just click and access the contents...

BUT, bear in mind that this is not an entirely safe method of encryption, merely an extra step that anyone who really wants in would need to take.

On re-reading those links, I'm sure you can create a password in a different manner - using something like Tools --> Options --> Security.......but I can't be 100% (I only use Office 2007 nowadays, and I haven't used a previous version for a long while) without seeing it in front of me...
