not sure why you had three thread open asking about AVs but I merged them so we can deal with it all at once.
1) the best dunno but I like AVG, AVAST or AVIRA all three have free version and they work well
2) You have to update regularly new viruses come out all the time so any and all AV programs need to be updated
3) I don't know what the heck that link is but its not from a site I'd trust! Stick with a well know company. Sites like Panda security and Trend micro both have free online scanners and like I said AVG and AVAST have good free AV programs.

Most of the freeware anti-virus programs are enough in terms of protection as long as you pay attention to what you are doing on the computer, keep the anti-virus, the OS and other programs updated and avoid risky activity (suspicious websites and programs). Even the best anti-virus can be beaten by user error, especially when it comes to manually installing the virus (by accident or otherwise) or when a virus takes advantage of a security hole in a program or the OS.
I’ve used Kaspersky 2010 since it came out and it works very well.It did very well in rootkit detection: It managed to detect, block, and remove all ten stealth malware samples that we threw at it. It also detected and disabled all ten test infections, and proved more successful than other applications.

Another good way to protect your self is with a HIPS program. Something like Defense Wall HIPS, which is great because of it user friendly interface. (Defense Wall is not a firewall)
Another one I like and use is Defense+ that is built into Comodo's firewall. Great combination, except I'm not crazy about their anti virus. Instead I use Kaspersky anti virus 2010 with Comodo.Last edited by TigerRaptorFX; January 7th, 2010 at 12:55 PM.

Scan your files (20MB limit) with this if not too sure. VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan (3dit- DO not split files larger than 20MB... that would be futile.

By far the best solution is a body guard at the gate in the first place. Firfox has and addon called No Script that will help greatly. Cumbersome for newbies though.
Above all else, some commensense and logic go a long way.Last edited by Taxmancometh; February 25th, 2010 at 03:00 AM.

I agree with most people here I have found that Kaspersky 2010 is one of the best out there right now. I found they do very well with there AV updates and there detection rate and removal is very good. Even running inconjunction with Spybot-S&D works very well also. They also offer a 1 month full version free trial with email registration.

I used to use AVG untill I started to run into issues with it...
Slowing system, it didnt catch a few things, etc.
I balked at trying Microsoft Security Essentials at first, since they have a pretty poor track record in the security department, namely live one care, and Antispyware from "Giant Software"
But I've been using it since it was made available and have migrated most of my customers over to it.
Very effective, and my one gripe about 3rd party security apps, namely that they can have issues after Microsoft updates and security patches, is abolished due to MSSE's integration INTO the updates

The point was, since you missed it, is that if you are going to claim someone else did the same thing, provide proof to back up your statement. If, as you said, it was "one click away".
