It sounds like you downloaded one of the many versions of ransomware or malware that is actually a fake antivirus program. I would get a rescue/recovery cd like those offered from Avira or Kaspersky
Avira AntiVir Rescue System - Download
Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10
Run one of those and then run Malwarebytes and/or Combo-Fix AND once you have it removed, if you get it removed, invest in a better AV program.

So in order to use this I need another computer right?

Yup, since your pc wont boot you need to use another PC to download and create the recovery disk, then use the burned disk to boot the infected pc.

Sorry I always leave that off. I usually assume that it would be painfully obvious that if you can't get your PC to boot or stay running that you'd need to use a second PC. But yes you'll need another computer to download the files needed.
The Kaspersky site gives you all the details you need including how to use the software from a USB device. The Avira site offers the software as either an iso, which can be burned from any dvd/vd burner or an executable file which should walk you through setup.
Getting your system recovered enough to boot is the first step. Then download and run the other programs just to make sure its cleanLast edited by RicheemxX; December 22nd, 2010 at 03:38 PM.

Have you been able to get to the setup screen before it turns off? The reason I ask is because you could then get the computer to boot up from the CD/DVD drive first and then do a system restore/repair. If not, then you could always remove the power cable from the hard drive (after turning the power off and removing the mains cable of course).

It could be the two issues are unrelated, did you have any issues with the PC prior to installing the bad av program?
What you may want to do is try a linux live CD, back-up any important data and then if you have the OS DVD/CD try a repair install of your OS.

You put the files on a CD/DVD, make sure you load from the CD drive instead of the hard drive and you have a linux operating system you can use to back your files up

So I first need to download the program to the cd/dvd then save my stuff?or just put a blank cd/dvd and save my files?

The linux cd suggestion was just so you could back-up your stuff. If you can't get to safe mode or last good configuration then doing a repair install would be the next suggestion. However doing so may delete some of your files in your personal folders like documents, photos, music ect. So my suggestion was to try a live CD which will allow you to boot from the CD and possibly copy your files over to disk.
Secondly in order to do the repair install you'll need the disks for your operating system. Do you have those? If not then you are in a bit more of a pickel.
Another thought would be, if you don't have anything on the system that is all that important and you have the OS disks you could just opt to format and re-install your OS. That is really the hassle free way assuming these issues were cause by the initial virus.Last edited by RicheemxX; December 30th, 2010 at 01:28 AM.
