Be On The Lookout For Fake AVG Software

Ransomware has taken a new twist this time incorporating the name, images and logo directly from AVG. Looking at some of the screen shots I'd say it is rather real looking

Encyclopedia entry: AVGAntivirus2011 - Learn more about malware - Microsoft Malware Protection Center
'AVG Antivirus 2011' is a variant of Win32/FakeXPA - a family of programs that claims to scan for malware and displays fake warnings of "malicious programs and viruses". They then inform the user that they need to pay money to register the software in order to remove these non-existent threats. Some members of the Win32/FakeXPA family may also download additional malware and have been observed in the wild downloading variants of Win32/Alureon.

Good thing I only use Avira now days.

    No confusion with AVG.

But looked at the list of fake products in the 1st link in the quoted text, and I noticed the Antivir (which is what Avira Commonly uses), logo, doesn't use the Avira Red Umbrella Logo, which would be dead giveaway, and the Shield Logo looks more like Microsoft Antivirus than Avira.

Um, its a dead giveaway for those of us who have the experience to know what we are looking at/for. For the regular Joe/Jill, looking for AV software, it probably looks like a port in the storm.
