Virus attack through Windows Live Messenger Live
Hi
First post.
Within 10 mins of opening Windows Live Messenger, my 'PC Tools Spyware' Behaviour Guard gives me an alert saying that it has detected something (slightly different messages) and I choose the option of quarantine. Window Live Messenger shuts down automatically.
Checking the quarantine log shows 4 to 7 attacks - status low risk. Typically, the attack description is described as C:\users\myaccount name\AppData\LocalMicrosoft\Windows Live\Contacts\my email address\DBStore and then either \Backup\temp or \Logfiles followed by a ref that generally has \edb in it.
The first threat listed is different, in that it refers to Windows and a temporary internet file.
My security scan says I have no infections and is up to date. My PC is running Vista. I appear to have no problem with the internet, nor when I open just my hotmail account first without opening windows Live Messenger. I understand little about operating systems and the quarantine message details are meaningless to me.
Is this problem to do with live messanger ie one of my contacts has a virus problem and is sending me and all open contacts malware?
Or is it a problem with my PC security?
Do I uninstall live messenger and reinstall (presumably losing all my contacts?)
Hope somebody out there can help, which will be much appreciated,
Mick

Welcome to TechIMO!
I can't speak directly to this, but in general, Spyware scanner programs will identify things like tool bars as spyware, because tool bars DO spy on you. It is part of the agreement for use. (nothing is free)
That's why most scanners, will warn you that deleting some spyware will disable some programs.
There are other semi legit program that they will identify also.
Net 0, when it was free, comes to mind.Hard Sayin Not Knowin

Uninstall your windows live messenger. That should do the trick, You will not lose your contacts. Download Windows live messenger again from a different website to the one your previously downloaded it from.
