    IRS Letter, Spam/Malware ?

As far as I know, I've never given the Infernal Revenue Service my email, however I've been known to forget, remember my bday is February 16, 1916

Anyway, I got two emails that found their way into my "Spam" box from the "IRS"

    The link shows
    no-replyucyne@irs.gov
The email size is 32kb BUT has an attachment

    Ideas ?

    Thx
    Doc

    It's a scam.

IRS: Don’t open that attachment or click on that link | Business First

“The IRS does not send out unsolicited emails to taxpayers, nor will the IRS ask for detailed personal and financial information in an email,” an agency news release said. “The IRS will never ask for the PIN numbers, passwords or similar secret access information regarding a taxpayer’s credit card, bank or other financial account, and the IRS does not discuss tax account matters with taxpayers by email.”

Yup, figured that, I never open odd mail, especially with "attachments" like this one.

What made me wonder, when I right clicked the mail and copied the "from" address, it showed a IRS.gov website, can just anyone fake a .gov return address ?

    Thx

Yes. The internet is full of lawlessness.

Except for me. I need your help getting 5 million in gold bars out of a safety deposit box in New York. If you will send me a $ 1000 for air fair from Kenya, I'll meet you there and we can split it!

    Hurry!

IPNetInfo: Retrieve IP Address Information from WHOIS servers

This utility can be very useful for finding the origin of unsolicited mail. You can simply copy the message headers from your email software and paste them into IPNetInfo utility. IPNetInfo automatically extracts all IP addresses from the message headers, and displays the information about these IP addresses.
