Laptop security for wifi and personal info
I am looking in to buying this laptop
Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7340 17.3" Laptop | Staples®
It has face recognition for logging on. Not sure this will protect me if it is stolen.
What is recommended to protect personal info if it is stolen?

Dont know much about the face recognition for logging in.
As for protecting yourself at a wifi hotspot, using a VPN connection between your home connection and your laptop so all your surfing over the wifi is encrypted

AFAIK face recognition has been pretty easy to crack on most systems. Good encryption is still key to most things. Obviously none will be 100% effective, thus not keeping person sensitive stuff on a laptop is best.
VPN is the best route as GZ said, but if you are that worried about sending stuff via unsecured networks then you also gotta think about snoops looking over your shoulder for logins and passwords...just sayin
