Is this something to be worried about?
Well, I'm totally clueless, especially when I should be asleep, with internet security and when I should be concerned.
I have been using zone alarm for a long time now and just recently installed sygate as well.
I noticed sygate picking up one thing in particular that za has not. Here's the info it gives to me:
blocked, incoming;
destination host= 255.255.255.255
destination port/icmp type= 68
source ip= 24.34.242.34
source port/icmp code= 67
Can anyone help me?

I presume your ISP is AT&T, 'cause that's their IP.

It's probably a ping from them to check you are alive - sometimes called a "heartbeat"/
I doubt it's anything to be concerned about.
Sygate may detect pings more than Zone Alarm, which may let them though by sdefault.
I'd be more worried about outgoing pings.
Cheers
Mick

Okay, that's what I was hoping to hear. I checked on the whois thing on geektools and seemed to want to believe that, but I'm kind of pessimistic.
Thanks mickwish!

Re: Cable/DSL
ZoneAlarm and Sygate are firewalls.Originally posted by AgentCrypto
if you have a Cable/DSL connection you need a firewall . . .
if you have Dial-Up don't worry about jack dude...
1.the connection is too slow to become a Zombie or Upload your files
2.your IP Address changes everytime you login to the NET
And telling someone just because they're on dial-up they shouldn't worry is just . . . well . . . dumb.
A machine could be remotely started at anytime to start pinging an IP. Doesn't have to be just broadband to be a Zombie.
And your IP doesn't always change on dial-up, I've had many occasions where I got the same IP address.

Oh contrare.Originally posted by AgentCrypto
but mostly all that stuff is worthless to anyone
Port 68 = DHCP Client, sends out a request to find informaiton to configure client system with.
Port 67 = DHCP Server, used to provide clients with network configuration information and other data
Some good reading here

Firewall monitor what goes OUT of your computer. A router doesn't.
A good basic firewall like Sygate ot TPF doesn't take up much resources, so I figure the added security doesn't hurt.
If you have XP, wait till you see what wants out.

I'm a fan of Sygate Personal Firewall

Yep, I am running Sygate right now.
Side note: I have noticed that both with sygate and TPF, if I don't reinstall it every 6 months, it takes my computer forever to boot and shut down (I can prevent the shut down prob if I end task on the firewall). The OS is XP.
Anyone else experience this?

Hey thanks everyone for your feedback. By the way I do have cable, don't think I could ever go back to dialup.
yep like you said fatalx if it doesn't hurt.....why not use it, that's my opinion atleast. I just tend to be overly cautious also. But thank god haven't switched to xp yet, I've had a copy laying around here for quite a while but still haven't tried it out yet.
I've been trying to tell a friend of mine running bare except the router to try za, sygate, or tpf, but no dice. I should show him this thread.
I couldn't get that link working evilrick, but I read a bunch about ports 67 and 68 the other day but I'd be interested to learn more about this.

I'll have to watch out for that slowdown, although I'm on 2k right now I suppose the problem might be there also.
How have you all liked tpf compared to sygate or za? I downloaded version 2. something a little while ago but haven't tried it out yet.

Never noticed any slowdown?
Ive never noticed any slowdown with sygate. Been Running it and tpf for quite a while on both 2k pro and xp pro. I prefer sygates features, look and feel as well as I believe it's a fine product.
