Am i right in thinking it does this by having a cookie send the info or is there some other way that i should no of?
When moderator posts you see his sigy as well as your ip,IE version and windows version. 1st time i have seen this.

nothing to do with cookies ...cookies are a way of applying your preferences/tracking etc.
An IP address is allocated to you by your ISP and is used to direct\deliver your chosen web page to you and not me. No IP address = No World Wide Web! A firewall is a barrier that stops others "seeing\connecting" to you when you have not requested them to do so. You request a web page be delivered to your computer every time you click a link. |

If you were behind NAT then yea you could be a bit concerned, but a plain firewall will not hide your IP.
A local software firewall on your machine will limit connections to/from your machine. A hardware firewall will manage traffic at the 'front door' so to speak. NAT will give you a different IP that the public can not see w/o a router. A firewall does not hide the IP.

Not necessarily ...I surf thru Norton Internet Security proxy, but my IP is still visible to me in the image above, If you look at the bottom right of your posts, just above the "quote" button, you will see it says "IP Logged". You are not allowed to post without them knowing your IP because you might post something inflamatory or illegal and they need to know where to send the Feds!
There are those that know how to "spoof" an IP address ...but that is basically i-net fraud so we won't discuss it.
take a look at Qualy's Browser Check and GRC.com's ShieldsUp! to find out what is being revealed by your browser and test your online security.

NIS isn't functioning properly if your name is visible to the webpage.
It's common that os/browser version can be identified (those can be blocked, but that risks some pages not working) but your name should not be available.

//Hmm..
I don't understand your image. How can you have image of my proxy ip? I would understand if it was plain text but how is it an image?

Neat, ain't it?
It's some kind of script making the image. Was discussed here earlier.
Cheers

The image is located on a web server, when you load this page your browser is directed to the server by the image's address, the servers findings, i.e. your details ...are displayed in the banner "window". I can't see your IP address in the image ...I only see my own details.

Yeah, I noticed it from the link michwish provided.
And, too, that it didn't list any name but just some random line on the third row.
