Best AntiVirus?
Hey Mates,
Im also curious on what AntiVirus you guys use and which one is your favorite one. Is it the usual like Norton or Mcafee or is it some unusual that works great? I have used many: Norton, Mcafee, Pc-Cillin, Nod32, F-Secure, Panda, etc, many. I want to know your opinion and please your comments. Thanks a lot.Last edited by Mate88; August 11th, 2003 at 03:29 PM.

I have to say Norton...
it hasn't failed me for 4 years.

My Choice?
I voted for Norton since its my favorite and I have used it many years without flaws or viruses. I just like Symantec, very secure and reliable, and excellent AntiVirus too. Although it is heavy and takes a lot or rams to run its worth the effort IMO.
Regards

A few year back I was running McAfee on my work PC. After I upgraded to more RAM (512mb) I noticed that the system was acting sluggishly -- exactly the opposite of what I expected to happen! The mouse would hesitate as I moved across the screen, the network was slow, and it took forever to open any programs.
After trying new memory, I realized what it was -- the antivirus program. As soon as I turned McAfee off, the system was lightning again.
I switched to Norton AntiVirus that day, and I haven't looked back. Well worth the investment!

Without a doubt, I'd have to say Sophos. Those folks respond to new viri attacks I can't help but wonder if they're writing the virus' to begin with.
I will have to say though that the Sophos client is resource intensive piece of software and can be a real pain to keep running on client machines.
I'm running Norton my home machine though and have been nothing but happy with it. For home usuage it's a nice choice.Last edited by Scott Tiger; August 11th, 2003 at 03:36 PM.

I've been using McAfee since my first computer (over seven years ago) and have yet to have any trouble with it. I did try Norton a few years back, and found that it seemed to run less efficiently than McAfee.
But, both McAfee and Norton seem to be the industry standards, and I'd say you can't go wrong with either

I liked AVG because it works. And it's free. Where's the problem in that?
I used MacAfee for a year after I got my Dell, and I was apparently virus free. Then, my trial subscription courtesy of Dell ran out, and I switched to AVG. It immediately found 2 viruses that MacAfee missed. The files also had a created on date of weeks before switching, and I kept my defs up to date. I used Norton a few years back as well, and I liked it as well. But it's not free, so it didn't get my vote.
Currently using PCCillin on one of my systems, and so far it's running pretty well."I was absolutely astounded that something like a Chee-to could become a pop icon," said Evans. "It's international. I've even seen it online on a Russian site."

I use NAV on my main machine and AVG Pro on my secondary machine. They both seem to work well. I have been using NAV for about five years and I just started using AVG about a month ago and so far all is well.......

i voted for NOD32...it is w/o a doubt THE best AV out there. it's what the pros use to clean infected networks. they also have one of the best track records for catching viruses "in the wild" which is the real litmus test on how effective a product can be!
for personal use...i'm kinda cheap.
plus, my computer usage habits are much less likely to get viruses, ie. i don't exchanges files w/people or run clients that do, i've disabled a lot of browser/email/OS settings that are potential holes, etc...so i run AVG and it's been working fine for me.Last edited by PresterJohn; August 12th, 2003 at 10:22 AM.

Best antivirus is to NOT use outlook and to only download thing from trustworthy places and check the tasklist and netstat weekly

I would definately suggest ither NOD32 or Kaspersky and if i was picking one of the two i'd go with NOD32 because of its history of "catching viruses in the wild".

PC-cillin!

After cleaning a bunch of computers infected by KLEZ last summer, I learned that PC-cillin was immune to it. I cleaned infected computers that were running up-to-date Norton, McAfee, AVG, InnoculatIT and others.
BTW, Panda was immune as well, and I have a number of friends that swear by it as well.
Norton is a system resources hog as well, and McAfee can't even catch itself!
Harder
Almost forgot . . . . .
PC-cillin updated the definition files twice last night, again this morning, and also updated the scan engine this morning!
(3 updates in less than 12 hours.)

ok, i'm at a loss right now...
I do not currently have any Anti-Virus programs on my computer... I've read TONS of good things about every program out there, but then I've also read TONS of bad things about them too.
I'm so confused as to which one I should get.
I don't want Norton... Used it, don't like it.
Rather not have McAfee...
PcCillin... maybe
I want something fast, uses few resources and doesn't contain lots of "bloatware" as I've seen people say.
One that I'm leaning to is the eTrust Ez 6.1... Not sure though.
:edit: I use Windows 2000 Sp3...Last edited by agathodaimon; August 13th, 2003 at 03:26 PM.

Nod32 also has the fastest scanning engine. it would scan my hd in about 2 minutes and it would take norton 2003 20 minutes. Norton also does not detect ANY trojans at all, even if it is in the virus list it still wont detect it

so... Should I get Nod32 instead?
I don't want to waste my money, because I don't have much!
But I need something good.

I started to use System Suite 4 after I had some issues with Norton 2003 on my Win2k. They kept telling me to reinstall. System Suite uses Trend Micro (PC-cillin) which found a Trojan, key tracker, and two viruses Norton did not detect.
In fairness, though you could probably hear the same changing from TM to NAV. It also uses the sygate firewall which has protected me from attack every time. That with the combined utilities makes for a very good deal for around 39 to 49 dollars fo SS5.I get all my News from FNC and right blogs, so I know I am fair and balanced.

I'm not sure how'd you come up with "the best" but I'm comfortable with Norton, combined with my router and zone alarm and common sense, and a little prayer, and some luck, ad-aware, spybot, amd more common sense

what anti-virus software do I run ??? ...... LINUX !!!

sorry...... had to say it !!!
(haven't had a virus YET!!
)
---------------
On a slightly more serious note...... I run NAV on any M$ machines that I must keep running. (Friends/kids/etc) it has been very reliable and with it's autoupdating script, I don't have to worry if they have the latest virus definitions or not.
