    60 Seconds,

Friend of mine described a problem he is having.
I have no idea of machine specs or os.

He goes to check his e-mail, and gets a message box saying"Windows will shut down in one minute"!

It does a 60 sec countdown then shuts down!

Is it a hack or a virus? Anyone heard anything similar?

I think it may happen all the time, but his words were " When I go to check my e-mail"! I don't think he uses the computer for any other reason! (??)

he obviously got it (virus) from one of the emails he received. and most likely he is using 2000 or XP so it's one of the blaster worms.

use shutdown -a to abort the system shutdown and download the patch from ms.

It certainly sounds like he has the blaster worm or one of the variants.
You should go to this thread and read thru it. It go into detail the patch, regestry changes, firewall and anti-virus/worm/trojan issues you should address to protect yourself from this known security hole.
