Which partition for swap drive to give best performance?

Sorry for all the questions, I am HD noob

I'm sure that previously you were recommended to put your swap file on a different partition (optimally on a different HD) than your windows install partition as it would avoid bottlenecks caused by too many read/write requests on the same partition.

However, I read a guide recently that said putting your swap-file on a different partition OF THE SAME hard drive really killed performance.

Is this true?

I only have one HD, so should my swap file be on my windows partition or my data partition? I've done all the usual tweaks like setting the size so it doesn't dynamically allocate swap which causes fragmentation etc.

Many thanks,

Neil

I tell you, I have tried every possible way/place to put a swap file, but in the end I have less problems by leaving it alone on the "c" partition.

I'm with Ace McGirk, I leave mine on C: but I do set the size since I have a fair amount of ram [512mb] Mine is set at 256mb. Seems fine for WinME.

Send a message via ICQ to JohnE.
Good swapfile information/guide here: Swapfile Optimization Guide. The article goes on to show that placing the swapfile on the C: partition is the best option, unless you have a separate IDE controller or SATA/RAID kind of setup.
