| problem with harddrive
Every now and then my harddrive shuts down, and won't start up again. I have
to turn off my compyter to fix the problem. Windows XP continues running, but
when I do something it locks up. I've turned off the option in Power Options, but
the problem continues. What can I do? |

Anything to do with the power supply?
What did you do when you turned the PC off and fix it?

i use a Western Digital Caviar WD200BB harddrive
I've checked the power cables, but they're all firmly connected, so unless the harddrive is broken, the problem is in the software. |

I was almost sure you would say Western Digital, because this has already happened to me (not exactly the same situation, but very similar) and I have many friends that have had many issues similar to this one with Western Digital hard drives, especially with older Caviar hard drives. When it happened to me I was lucky I was waiting for a new hard drive, because the Western Digital was useless. Why this happened to the hard drive was because first of all the hard drive was old and also because it was broken already. I am not sure though this is the same situation as yours. If it is then I am sorry to inform you, but that hard drive is pretty useless. Maybe start checking for cheap new ones?

And how could you know that your windows is running? Isnt that when your HDD is off, OS is not running.
I have a Quantum HDD. Similar to ur problem but it happened very different. After I have slot in my little brothers primary school CD into the CD-ROM, suddenly a blank screen appears and when I CTRL-ALT delete later, I then receive a blue screen. I saw the word "KERNEL error..." something like that and the whole thing (HDD etc) turned completely OFF immediately. I can't turn it back on at all but I could hear that my HDD tries to run during system check. Then after about 4-5 seconds, the HDD turned OFF again.
I have made a thread of this one. Some say its virus. I do believe that the data in there is still safe. Maybe it has got something to do with the motor inside that needs to be repaired. |

| thought you would say that, but the drive is only 2 years old, and hasn't been used heavily. What is a normal lifespan on a harddrive? |
