It seems that my hard drive is going south.
So I'm seeking out a replacement, and I figure this is the best place to ask for help.
These are some things I'm looking for:
Something quiet
Dependable (can run it 24/7)
Decent warranty
$100 maximum price (unless you know of a super awesome hard drive )
120 GB is enough space for me
And I'd like it to be compatible with this setup:
CPU: AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2100+ 1.7 GHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 128 MB
Audio Device: CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device (C-Media Wave Device)
Motherboard: ASUS A7V333
Current (and dying) Hard Disk Drive: MAXTOR 6L080J4 IDE 80 GB
Memory: 512 MB
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1612
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OEM
Thanks |

Do the HDs with more disk space run louder, die sooner, run hotter, or anything like that? I think I remember someone telling me once that it wasn't a good idea to buy a HD with too much disk space for some reason. Just wondering.. Because I have no idea at all about this stuff. |

If a HDD is going to die, it's going to die - kinda like humans - never know when.

I don't think bigger HDs die sooner/make more noise. For example, the computer I had before had a 3 gig hard drive and made lots of noise. The one I have right now is 15 gigs and makes no noise at all, and it isn't going to fail any time soon.
Just depends on how the manufacturer designs their drives I guess.

yeah, i do notice that a smaller drive usually is louder, my 13 gig HD's were alot louder then my 20 gig i have now, but it could be the 66/100/133 deal or the way it spins 5400 to 7200 rpm, that may cause the heat..? |

the hdd that have a rpm of 5400 run cooler than the 7200 rpm.
But the 7200 rpm is faster, so you need speed and a good ventilation .
My opinion is wd 7200 8 mb cache WITH good case fan!
Seagate has 10,000 rpm.
Anybody have experience with them?

IMO smaller (<20gb) drives are louder just because they are older so they didnt quite perfect all that stuff back then
