PQ Lost & Found

I acquired a copy of Power Quest's Lost & Found some time ago. Old timers from Sysopts will recall the give-away. Anyhow, I've not used it that often but have a drive I want to try to extract some file from for a friend. I started by connecting the drive a s slave to a fairly new computer. I was having trouble getting the program to recognize both drives at the end of the process. I started reading the help file and it said that any IDE controllers faster than ATA33 would cause trouble. SOOOO, I built an old computer specifically for this task and now both drives are recognized but the process of reading the source drive (40GB WD) is going to take 9 days and 20 hours!!! WTF!!! Any suggestions please? Thanks

That might be an accurate prediction, based on bit-by-bit reading of the entire disk and the program's undoubtedly out-of-date recovery and reconstruction algorithms AND the computer's limited ATA/33 bus transfer rate. Also note that the drive may be failing and the program is having trouble because it is encountering bad sectors - always a speed bump.

I would have come on here first and asked about that... I would have told you to get Ontrack's EasyRecovery or DataRecovery program instead of building a new PC for this purpose. It's about $200, but it is worth it if you will be recovering data from multiple customers' drives. It cranked through my 120GB drive in under 1 hour... and works with NTFS file structures as well as a slew of others...

FatalException,
Thanks for the info and suggestions but $200 for a program I might use once everyother year is not going to happen. The computer I built for this was free from old parts.

Try this one. It runs within Windows, and uses windows native access modes. It deals well with almost all kinds of nonmechanical damage. Best of all, it's freeware.
