| nero won't burn ISO image
I just reformatted my HD and reinstalled windows. I plan to install Linux to make it bual boot, but first I have to burn the linux ISO onto a cd. I tried to do this before the reformat, and it would burn, but the CD just wouldn't boot. I decided to try it after I reinstalled windows, thinking the reformat would set things straight. Boy was I wrong...
Now, it won't even burn a darn thing.
Relevant specs: Winders XP SP2, the burner is a Lite-on LTR-40125s (40x12x48x), Nero v. 5.5.7.2 (came with drive). If you need more information, just let me know.
Here's the log, let's see if you can get anything more out of it than me: Quote:

Nero has been shown to have compatability problems with SP2. I would roll back to SP1.

just in case you are using mandrake 10, boot from cd 2, not cd 1. this was a known bug, but it may be fixed by now. |

Before I reformatted my drive, I also had sp2 and Nero 6.?.?.?, and it would actually say that it had problems. So then I upgraded to the latest Nero version - which angered me, because it forced me to enter a product ID (even though I started with a completely legit version of Nero); I had no qualms about finding a pirated key off the internet for it ( ) just because I felt like I was getting
-->screwed<--.
Anyway, it was a big hassle and it still didn't work. However, I also tried BurnAtOnce back then (before reformat) and it didn't work either.
Maybe I oughta give BurnAtOnce a second go-around.

If you want to, go into Add/Remove programs and uninstall SP2 (before it's too late).
Just a note, now Microsoft is shipping all Windows XP cds with SP2 currently installed!!! Imagine that, get your brand new cd home, install it without a care, and Whammo, "I'm sorry, this program is not supported by Windows XP." It's also on any brand name new prefab PCs, too...gulp. |

AH HA!!! JUST AS I THOUGHT!
*Ahem*...
This is an interesting story.
It IS, in FACT, a hardware issue.
(Warning: long story ensues.)
Before I formatted my hard drive (hereafter referred to as "beforehand") my burner acted very strangely. It would copy cds just fine *with my dvd drive as the source*. However, if I ever wanted to make a cd *with my hard drive as the source* (i.e., data cd, iso image), it refused to work while the dvd was connected and working. I have both of them connected together on the secondary IDE channel, with the burner as master and the dvd as slave. Thus, when I wanted to copy a cd or watch a dvd movie on my computer, I would leave the dvd drive connected just like it was supposed to be. But if I wanted to make a compilation music cd, I would have to disconnect the power cable from the dvd drive (effectively disconnecting the drive).
It wasn't always that way. When I first built my computer (June 2003) it worked just fine any which way I wanted it to. But then I screwed my computer up, caused some major problems, tried to fix them by using windows restore (big mistake), and to make a long story short, it never was the same again.
I thought that this was just one of those quirks that windows develops over time (you all know what I'm talking about) kind of like how I had to tell my computer to restart/turn off twice before it would, and that reformatting would make it all peachy again.
But, as I've discovered today, I was wrong! I decided to give this old 'fix' a try - I powered off my computer, disconnected the dvd drive, turned it back on, and wala - ISO burning (with Nero) went off without a hitch.
Beforehand, I thought that it was something I would just have to 'deal with'; but as you can imagine, it gets to be quite tiresome after a while. And lately I've developed the attitude that I'm the boss of my computer, and NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!
DO YOU HEAR THAT, COMPUTER? I'M THE BOSS OF YOU!
I
AM
THE BOSS OF YOU!!!!!!
(reaches for baseball bat )
As you can see, my computer is driving me nuts. If I can't get this fixed, I'm likely to do something drastic (probably more along the lines of buying a new burner, though).
